Amber Heard claims that Johnny Depp is ‘shamefully continuing his psychological abuse’ in international press
USA TODAY (TNS) Amber Heard, who accused ex-husband Johnny Depp of domestic violence when she filed divorce papers in 2016, is firing back at him and British GQ over an interview in which he vehemently denied the allegations and said: “Ultimately, the truth will come out in all of this and I will be standing on the right side of the roaring rapids.”
In a statement, her reps told The
Hollywood Reporter: “If GQ had done even a basic investigation into Mr Depp’s claims, it would have quickly realised that his statements are entirely untrue.”
The statement also alleges that Depp has violated the NDA they each signed when their divorce was finalised last year after 15 months of marriage: “Mr. Depp has blatantly disregarded the parties’ confidentiality agreement and yet has refused to allow Ms. Heard to respond to his baseless allegations, despite repeated requests that she be allowed to do so.”
Heard’s team even went so far as to accuse Depp of gaslighting her: “Mr. Depp is shamefully continuing his psychological abuse of Ms Heard, who has attempted to put a very painful part of her life firmly in her past. One need only look at the physical evidence to draw the proper conclusion.”
In the story, published Wednesday, the Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald actor told interviewer Jonathan Heaf: “The thing that hurt me is being presented as something that you’re really as far away from as you could possibly get, you know?”
Heard filed for a restraining order against him in May 2016, providing evidence of harm, including a bruise on her cheek, claiming the actor had recently thrown a phone at her face. The Los Angeles police who went to their downtown loft the night of the alleged abuse have said they found no evidence of a crime when they arrived.
“To harm someone you love? As a kind of bully? No, it didn’t, it couldn’t even sound like me,” Depp insisted in the new profile. “So, initially, I just kept my mouth shut, you know? I knew it was going to stick on me and it would get weirder ... Spit out what you need to spit out and, you know, my attorneys will take care of the rest.”
But for Depp, the claims did not come without consequences.
“I could feel people look at me differently, because of the accusations towards you,” he said. “And then people start putting things in magazines: ‘He’s insane. He needs to take a sanity test ...’ You know, ludicrous stuff.”
“I’m sure it wasn’t easy for my 14-year-old boy to go to school, you know what I mean?” the 55-year-old Academy Award nominee said. “With people going, ‘Hey, look at this magazine, man. What, your dad beats up chicks or something?’ Why did he have to go through that? Why did my daughter have to go through that?”
Still, Depp feels his name will one day be cleared. “Ultimately, the truth will come out in all of this and I will be standing on the right side of the roaring rapids,” he said. “I know the truth and if I had to walk away from all of it today, the job, the career, all of it, and go toodle-oo, then fine.”
As for whether or not he gives thought to finding love again, Depp simply replied: “No.”
