Kin salak luang the Phrae way

Kin salak is a tradition communities in the northern provinces observe to make merit for deceased relatives. It doesn’t take place every year, so when it happens it’s a big thing for the locals. At the moment, the people of Phrae are excited about their own kin salak luang ( luang meaning big), set to take place soon. Of course, all are welcome to witness the grand event. Scheduled for Nov 1 at Wat Phra Bat Ming Mueang, one of the province’s most respected Buddhist temples, Phrae’s kin salak luang will see families from different communities bringing beautifully decorated offerings to the temple. Names of each participating family and their deceased relatives will be written on a long, narrow sheet of paper. The paper strips will be put together and monks will be invited to come for a lucky draw. Usually, each monk gets to pick more than one strip, as the number of offering sets is usually several times greater than the number of monks. With the paper, each monk will then have to search among the numerous offering sets for the ones that came from the families indicated in the paper they have picked. The practice results in a fun atmosphere, but entertainment is not the main objective. The lucky draw ensures that the offerings of every family go to random monks, instead of any preferred ones. It’s a wise way to teach people about impartiality. For the upcoming event, prior to the draw, at around 9am there will be a parade from Phrae Prida Market going along Ming Mueang Road to Wat Phra Bat Ming Mueang in the old town. Nov 1 is a weekday — a Thursday — but, since there is no guarantee that Phrae will hold such a grand event next year, why hesitate if you can make it?
