Hilltribe festival returns to Chiang Rai this winter
The Doi Tung mountaintop in Chiang Rai will become a destination for eco-friendly tourists as the “In-Doi Festival: Colors Of Doi Tung” will return to the grounds of the Doi Tung Development Project in Chiang Rai this winter.
Organised by the Mae Fah Luang Foundation under Royal Patronage, the fifth edition of the winter festival will offer hilltribe activities, products, entertainment and traditional delicacies every weekend and on public holidays in December and January, starting on Saturday.
Among the highlights will be a hilltribe market and the country’s highest art-andculture walking street, where visitors will be treated to more than 30 delectable dishes created by In-Doi chefs and will learn about the colourful cultures, the traditional way of living and identities of the six ethnic minority groups living on the mountain.
This is also an opportunity to experience fun-filled tribal-style adventurous activities designed for everyone in the family such as saba bowling, “Formula Doi”, stilt walking and a treetop walk perched 30m above ground offering a bird’s-eye view of the lush forest below. Many activities will be arranged to get children to explore nature.
There will also be DIY workshops on greeting-card design, handicraft, ceramic-making and painting, and tray gardening using natural materials; a fashion show of elaborate hand-woven fabric designs by youngsters from different hilltribes; a demonstration on traditional fabric weaving; and sales of locally made souvenirs. Visitors are encouraged to collect entry stamps at different stations in the festival for a chance to win special prizes.
To promote environmental awareness, the festival will encourage the use of packaging made from locally sourced natural products such as bamboo and banana leaves, while light sources will be provided by energy-saving light bulbs. Likewise, visitors will be whizzed around in electric vehicles.
