What’s happening in the LGBTI community
Last week, candle vigils were held at several venues around the country for the Transgender Day of Remembrance, which is observed annually on Nov 20 in memory of those who have been murdered as a result of transphobia. In Thailand, 21 transgender people aged 15-58 have been murdered in the past decade, according to the Trans Murder Monitoring done by Thai TGA.
Talk of election and political parties is all the rage these days. The latest figure to enter the political arena is LGBTI filmmaker Tanwarin Sukkhapisit of Insects In The Backyard fame, who has joined the Future Forward Party. Tanwarin vows to be the first katoey to sit in the House
of Representatives.
Ezra Miller broke the internet this month with his sexy gender-fluid shoot for Playboy. The much talked about collection sees the Fantastic Beasts actor in lace, stockings, heels, lipstick and bunny ears. Miller has embraced a non- binary identity and has appeared multiple times in androgynous fashion.
Celine Dion has launched a gender-neutral clothing line, Celinununu, for children. Forget the stereotypical blue for boys and pink for girls. It’s time for cool, edgy monochrome for the kids. “Inspire your children to be free and find their own individuality through clothes,” the tagline on celinununu.com encourages.
A workshop organised by the UNDP, the Department of Rights and Liberties Protection of the Ministry of Justice, and Sisters Foundation was held ear
lier this month to improve how police officers engage with transgender people. Following participant input, a handbook is currently being developed to further enhance law enforcement capacity in their interaction with transgender people, with consideration of
their gender identity in mind.
