Genesis G70 named ‘Car of the Year’
A few years ago, Hyundai went after Lexus and Mercedes by launching a luxury division of its own. Now the new Genisis brand has made its mark, winning Motor Trend’s 2019 Car of the Year award.
Motor Trend, an American automobile magazine, announced its “Of the Year” awards during an event at the Petersen Automotive Museum during the Los Angeles Auto Show on Tuesday in front of an audience of celebrities and auto executives.
The Genesis G70, a luxury sports sedan that’s priced identically to the BMW 3 Series, took home Motor Trend’s coveted golden calipers.
Judges of the annual car competition found the entry-level, compact Genesis G70 to be “smooth, quiet, fast, upscale, nimble, good looking, and a great value.”
“It hits all the right notes,” said Angus MacKenzie, Motor Trend’s international bureau chief.
“Punchy powertrains and an agile chassis that’s a ton of fun, sporty exterior styling with strong graphics, and a wellappointed interior.”
Vehicles competing for the award were evaluated on six key criteria: safety, efficiency, value, advancement in design, engineering excellence and performance of intended function.
“This year brought many strong contenders to the table, making our job that much more difficult,” said Edward Low, Motor Trend editor-in-chief and SVP of content. “Rest assured, the awards are being presented to the best of the best in the industry.”
Other 2019 Motor Trend “Of the Year” winners include:
Truck of the year: Ram 1500
SUV of the Year: Jeep Wrangler Person of the Year: Sergio Marchionne, chairman and CEO of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV and Ferrari.
