Game Of Thrones security heightened to ‘Gestapo’ levels

Winter is coming. And apparently, so is additional security.

HBO juggernaut Game Of Thrones has been filming Season 8, set to premiere in April 2019, and the scripts and final plot lines have been kept tightly under wraps.

But Game Of Thrones director David Nutter revealed just how seriously the show is taking the task of avoiding leaks of any information from the final season.

Along with confirming that production has been filming fake scenes to throw would-be sleuths off the scent of what to expect in the upcoming season, Nutter also explained the reasoning behind extreme security this season. “Well, sometimes there were paparazzi in amazing places — on construction cranes and all kinds of crazy places, to try to get a point of view of things,” Nutter said in an interview with the Huffington Post, describing the lengths paps would go to for information. “They were all over, everywhere, trying to get in on what was happening.”

Nutter also divulged just how tight security was surrounding the final episodes, even comparing it to the secret police of Nazi Germany and German-occupied Europe.

“But it was definitely a situation where there was no paper on the set, [that] type of thing,” he said “[The production team] wanted to make sure nobody knew what was happening, and they went to the nth degree like they do on the show in general. They basically take it to the point where it’s like the Gestapo. It’s tough to get answers.”

They’re not being completely unreasonable. Last November, an Iranian hacker was charged with stealing an unaired episode and scripts from Season 7, demanding a ransom of US$6 million (198.2 million baht) in bitcoin.

Nutter, who joined the HBO mega-hit show in its second season, has directed some of t he series’ most shocking moments, including the Season 3 episode The Rains Of Castamere, known for its infamous “Red Wedding” scenes, and Season 5’s Mother’s Mercy, which ended with the assassination of Jon Snow by members of the Night’s Watch.
