GOMEZ GETS REAL ABOUT SELFIMAGE STRUGGLES

- MAEVE MCDERMOTT

Even during a photoshoot for her own sneaker campaign, Selena Gomez can still get real about her rocky moments.

Gomez spoke to Elle while shooting for her new Puma campaign, telling the magazine: “I get really insecure sometimes.”

“I go through weird ups and downs,” she added.

The singer has had a low-key year after undergoing a kidney transplant in 2017 to treat complications from her lupus diagnosis.

“I want to encourage women,” Gomez said about her new clothing line, with some of the garments featuring the phrase “strong inside out” stitched on the inside. “I really would love to use my platform for good, and along the way have so much fun with movies and the music.”

“I think for me, I’ve always wanted to be a good example,” she continued. “Not because I’m not going to mess up — I f*ck up all the time. It’s more just that I want to be honest with them. I’m going to say, ‘I’m trying the best I can and that’s what you can do too — just try the best that you can, and it’s hard. And you’re not alone’.”

Following Gomez’s kidney transplant, actress Francia Raisa, Gomez’s best friend and donor, shared that both women had a difficult recovery process following the surgery.

“Selena and I both went through a depression,” she told the press last year. “She had some complications with hers, and she has bigger scars than I do that [weren’t] expected.”
