The art of giving

- — Pichaya Svasti

To raise funds for its continued mission to grant around 30 scholarships per year to art students and support talented young artists who wish to have exhibitions of their own, the Marsi Foundation in honour of the late HSH Princess Marsi Sukhumbhand Paribatra has launched a new collection of souvenirs bearing the princess’ art, which will make perfect Christmas and New Year’s gifts for anyone. The souvenirs range from small brooches (40 baht each) to postcards (50 baht each or 200 baht per set), pencil box sets (100 baht per set), notebooks (300 baht each), tote bags (350 baht each), scarves and Marsi Books (1,500 baht each), reproductions of the princess’ paintings (1,500 baht each for medium-sized pieces and 6,000 baht each for large-sized ones) and more. All proceeds will go to support the foundation’s work for the benefits of the Thai artistic circle. In addition, the foundation also introduces Marsi X FlynowIII, a special collection of outfits and accessories inspired by the artist princess’ surrealist-fantastic paintings, for fashionistas and those wanting to share “wearable art” with families and friends as gifts. Marsi X FlynowIII comprises dresses, shirts, T-shirts, scarves, shawls and tote bags bearing four of the princess’ paintings — La Mort Aux Dents, La Belle Et Bête, Le Mariage Mystique De Prince Noui À Vellara and Le Bal. Also available for sale are T-shirts bearing the princess’ French-language handwriting of her wish to utilise art in mirroring life and death. Part of the proceeds from the sale of the collection will be donated by Flynow III to the foundation. The foundation’s souvenirs and the Marsi X FlynowIII collection are available at the “Beauty And Ugliness: Aesthetic Of Marsi” art exhibition from today to Dec 23, except Mondays and Tuesdays, from 9am to 6.30pm at the National Gallery on Chao Fah Road. In addition, the Marsi X FlynowIII outfits can be purchased at all five Flynow III stores at leading department stores. The paintings of Princess Marsi are unique in their lavish, intricate details, with a mass of imaginary halfman, half-animal creatures that resemble fairy-tale beings, yet offer a deep philosophical reflection on life and death. The influence of literature, art history and mythology are prominent, and then there was the princess’ beloved pets — dogs, cats and birds — as well as a recurrence of a mysterious, diminutive yet strong female form.
