CITY LIGHT, CITY BRIGHT

COFFEE THAT MAKES A DIFFERENCE

- STORY HARRISON WHITE

In the heart of one of Bangkok’s red-light areas, CityLight Coffee in Sukhumvit 4 offers refuge for workers in the area and anyone in need of their daily caffeine hit. The recently renovated cafe has high ceilings, large comfy couches and is air-conditioned, which we know is much needed in this city.

CityLight is also tries to make a difference by hiring staff who have previously worked in the area, providing them with skills and assistance. Running an ethical business is of top priority here, as their coffee beans are sourced via direct-trade with farmers in Thailand’s Doi Chang mountains, an area that has been supported with programmes to assist farmers in transitioning from black market opium to ethically-farmed coffee beans. A fact that’s always nice to know, your morning coffee is making a difference in the world.

The well-trained baristas can make everything from the basic Americano (B80) or a Flavoured frappé (B125) to a Cold Pour, a process that sees hot water poured directly over coffee sieved onto ice. I opt for the alltime classic latte (B90) and I am not disappointed but would have liked a slightly stronger brew to kickstart my day.

A recently updated food menu offers homemade cakes and Italian style toasted paninis. The Chicken pesto sandwich (B170) comes hot and well toasted. The chicken filling is full and the cheese plentiful, with a small garden salad adding a nice garnish.

CityLight also makes a range of cakes that are baked every day. When determining which one to try, my choice becomes easy as when I ask for the Wi-Fi password (so millennial, I know) I’m told “trythecarrotcake”! The Carrot cake (80B) is soft and moist, a clear indication of its freshness and pairs well with the latte. They also have gluten-free options available.

Overall CityLight Coffee is a great spot for those looking for rest and a bite — a world away from the hustle and bustle of the street outside, with prices that are in-line with the area.

City Light opens Monday to Friday, 7.30am-9.30pm and on Saturday from 7.30am-3.30pm. On Sukhumvit 4 between Heidelberg Pub and 7-Eleven.
