Dept warns against bogus job offers on Canadian farms

- POST REPORTERS

The Department of Employment (DOE) has warned Thai workers to be wary of Facebook posts offering work on farms in Canada.

DOE director-general Petcharat Sinuay said her agency discovered a Facebook page with posts inviting Thai workers with agricultural experience working in Israel to work for a well-known company in Canada.

People interested, according to the Facebook page, can fill in an online form through a link posted on the page and wait for reply from the company’s representatives.

It also gives a telephone number for inquiries with a 050 phone code.

The department checks found that Canada has not allowed unskilled foreign workers to work in the country for a long time, Ms Petcharat said.

The government there has already revoked work visas for foreign workers in the agricultural sector, except those picking worms in farms, she said.

“Claims that people can be found permanent work in the agricultural sector in Canada are unlikely to be true,” said Ms Petcharat.

Job seekers and Thai workers in Israel should not fall victim to people trying to con them by promising them unskilled jobs in Canada, saying they risk losing money or legal action by flouting a country’s labour laws.

Those keen on working overseas should think about whether the rewards are worth it and whether what they are doing is legal, Ms Petcharat said.

They should examine a company’s background before applying for jobs or contacting the DOE’s provincial offices to seek information or report offences if they fall victim to scammers, she noted.

They can also call the DOE’s 1506 ext 2 Hotline or 02-0245-6763, she added.
