Icelandic clarinet virtuoso Dimitri Ashkenazy will be performing with the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra during the “Tale From Afar” concert at Mahidol University’s Prince Mahidol Hall, Salaya campus, on Friday at 7pm and Saturday at 4pm.

This time around he will bring his gentle tones and shapely phrasing to Weber’s romantic Clarinet Concerto No.1 In F Minor, Op 73 — a three-movement piece considered a gem in the instrument’s repertoire.

The orchestra will be led under the baton of Gudni Emilsson in a programme of three literature-inspired symphonic works full of vivid characters and captivating legends, namely Grieg’s peerless Peer Gynt Suite No.2 Op 55 — based on the play by Henrik Ibsen. This Norwegian masterpiece has some of the most recognisable tunes in the repertory.

Also featured will be Weber’s darkly spirited Overture from Der Freischütz, a German opera with spoken dialogue in three acts; and a newly commissioned work by Morakot Cherdchoo-ngarm based on the Buddhist themed book The Pilgrim Kamanita, by Karl Gjellerup, winner of the Nobel Prize in 1917.

Tickets cost 400, 600, 800, 1,000 and 1,500 baht ( half prices for students under 25 years) and can be purchased from Thai Ticket Major outlets (visit thaiticketmajor. com or call 02-262-3456) and PMH Box Office (call 02-849-6565/6 ext 6603/ 4 and 6624).
