Thunder Castle return to the summit

- TOR CHITTINAND

Teen sensation Suphanat Mueanta showed poacher’s instinct to score with a header and give Buriram United a 1-0 victory at PTT Rayong, steering the defending champions back to the top spot in Thai League 1 last night.

Suphanat, who was substituted shortly afterwards, picked up a fine Andres Tunez cross from the left to deliver the winner in the 53rd minute.

The win gave the Thunder Castle a one-point edge on Chiang Rai United, who pulled off an injury-time 1-1 draw with Ratchaburi. Lossemy Karaboue gave Ratchaburi the lead in the 58th minute and Bill Rosimar equalised for the hosts.

Third-placed Port had a late escape last night when an injury-time goal by Rolando Blackburn gave them a 1-1 draw at struggling PT Prachuap.

Prachuap were put on course for their first win in seven games by a Tanaboon Ketsarat own goal on 73 minutes before Blackburn spoiled their party shortly before the final whistle.

Bangkok United paid a heavy price for Pokklaw A-nan’s 70th-minute red card that allowed hosts Suphanburi to cancel out Vander Luis’ second-half strike. Suphanburi netted the equaliser through Kim Sung-Hwan eight minutes from time.

Ten-man Chiangmai let Chainat off the hook, allowing the hosts to salvage a 2-2 draw.

In Saturday night’s late game, former Kirins coach Pairoj Bovornwattanadilok started his new job at Sukhothai with a 2-2 draw at Chonburi.

The hosts went ahead in the 13th minute when Herlison Caion scored, but Sukhothai levelled near the half-hour mark through Khapfah Boonmathun.

Irwin Herrera briefly tilted the balance in the visitors’ favour in the 58th minute, but the Sharks restored the equilibrium quickly with Angel Guirado finding the net for the hosts.
