Three modern operas from an American diva
American diva Cassandra Black will return to the Kingdom to sing three modern opera heroines with Opera Siam in the Main Hall of Thailand Cultural Center, Ratchadaphisek Road, tomorrow at 8pm.
This is the first time Opera Siam will present excerpts from three operas with the thrilling soprano roles to be taken by Black, who has portrayed more than 20 of opera’s leading ladies in both the contemporary and standard repertoire.
She will show her dramatic, silvery and powerful characterisations in her debut role of Salome, singing to the decapitated head of John the Baptist in Salome by Richard Strauss. This thrilling final scene is one of the most difficult tests for a soprano — one of the biggest solo pieces in any opera.
She will then sing the role of Marie in three excepts from Wozzeck, hailed as the most influential opera of the 20th century by Austrian composer Alban Berg.
The evening show will conclude with the world premiere of a suite from Somtow Sucharitkul’s Helena Citronova, an opera created as a memorial to the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. Black will portray Helena in the true story of a Slovak jew in the concentration camp who has a passionate and tortured relationship with an SS man. This suite will be broadcast by Slovak National Radio later in the year.
Tickets cost 650 and 1,100 baht and can be booked through Line @opersiam and ticketmelon.com.
