Michael Douglas talks kids dating, shares advice from his 102-year-old dad, Kirk Douglas

Like many dads, Michael Douglas has strong opinions about his kids dating.

The 75-year-old star of The

Kominsky Method which debuts on Netflix next week opened up to

ET about being a protective father, the baffling world of teen relationships, and the best piece of advice his famous dad, Kirk Douglas, ever gave him.

In the interview, published earlier this week, Douglas revealed 16-year-old daughter Carys is “looking for love”.

“She’s not fessed up yet to having a boyfriend,” he said. “She’s on the lookout. She’s looking around.”

The Academy Award winner, who shares two children with his wife, actress Catherine Zeta-Jones, said he’s often given his kids dating advice — whether they’ve asked for it or not.

“I give a lot of unsolicited advice, which is not a great idea, but I can’t help myself,” he said. “With dating, you gotta decide at an early age if you are more concerned about the looks versus who’s got a good heart, who’s got a good sense of humour, who’s gonna be a good partner.”

In addition to describing what he wants his kids to look for in who they date, Douglas also explained that watching his children make friends with members of the opposite sex took him by surprise.

“My eldest [with Zeta-Jones] is 19, and they start like, ‘Can I invite so and so over for a sleepover, a bunch of us?’,” Douglas said. “And they invite girls. ‘Wait, wait, wait, what’s going on?’ and he’s like, ‘Oh no, dad, they’re friends. Come on, we’re friends.’”

Douglas added: “It’s beautiful to watch, actually. I mean, me with my paranoid images and then seeing these kids get along.”

Douglas also shared the best advice he ever got from his dad, 102-year-old Kirk Douglas.

“Whatever you do in life, just do it to your utmost ability,” Douglas said his dad would tell him. “Do it with full commitment, and then, screw it. If it doesn’t work out, move on. But, you know, you left it with the idea that there is nothing more you could have done.” As for his own daughter dating, the actor said he isn’t too concerned.

“I don’t worry too much about this,” he said. “She’s in good shape.”
