Amazon temporarily closed one of its shops in Bangkok after a customer complained about finding small unknown crystals in two containers of iced chocolate.

Franchise owner PTT Oil and Retail Co, the business arm of PTT Plc, announced on Wednesday the immediate temporary closure of its outlet in GMM Grammy Place Building on Asoke Road so that equipment could be sanitised. No date about its reopening was given.

The firm had posted a picture of a placard which indicated the shop would reopen yesterday. However, calls to the cafe by the Bangkok Post went unanswered.

The shop’s closure was announced after a Facebook user by the name of Sarawut Kirtiwasin said he had ordered two cups of iced chocolate for takeaway at the cafe outlet on Tuesday. However, he was horrified to discover small-sized hard crystals in the drink. He posted a video on social media showing what he had found with the caption: “Will we survive tonight?”

Cafe Amazon posted a response on its Facebook account on Wednesday night. It said the small clear objects in the drink were a result of a substandard container being used to supply ice to the shop.

The supplier, whose name was not disclosed, had promised to ensure all production processes would meet the required standards. It did not say what the hard crystals found by the customers were.

The customer also demanded to know if it would be harmful to swallow the crystals.
