An afternoon gastronomi­c affair, in which oodles of finger food are complement­ed by hot tea, may sound romantic and always seemly.

But not everyone living in steamy Bangkok would agree, logically.

When it comes to freshening up a tropical afternoon in style, more ideal would be something high-flown, frosty and sparkling.

Such quintessen­tial elements can be found in the signature afternoon tea of the Rosewood Hotel Bangkok.

Served amid an exquisite setting of the hotel’s all-day-dining outlet, Lakorn European Brasserie, the tipple time fare encompasse­s a gourmet selection of classic light bites, the guest’s choice of Lavazza coffee or Mariage Frères tea, a glass of Piper-Heidsieck Champagne, and a helping of Champagne-infused soft-serve ice cream.

Priced at 1,299 baht per person, the set features three savoury treats, crafted by chef de cuisine Jarno Robles.

The selection rotates daily, and may be tailor-made to the diner’s request.

On the day I visited, it was cheeseburg­er slider with truffle mayonnaise; burrata and tomatoes sandwich; and crab on pan-toasted brioche bun.

Following the sandwich course is the Champagne soft-serve, exclusivel­y concocted with premium Hokkaido milk from Hokkaido SoftKream, paired with a glass of Champagne brut.

The second half of the tea affair was marvellous­ly represente­d by a repertoire of delicious desserts by executive pastry chef Florian Couteau. Of it, you’ll be indulged by a super rich and juicy baba au rhum cake with vanilla cream and candied orange.

This is followed by a heavenly platter of jasmine chocolate ganache on sea salt chocolate sable; mandarin-passion fruit marmalade; and vanilla cheesecake with berry glaze.

The afternoon finishes off with a collection of house-made petit fours.

For an ultimate sparkling treat, additional offers of vintage Champagne from the Piper-Heidsieck trolley are also available. Prices range from 500 and 750 baht per glass to 5,000 and 6,000 baht per bottle.
