GETTING AROUND

-

Once on the island, getting to and from the airport is best left to hiring a driver through your resort. When it comes to getting around, motorbikes are the norm for most explorers and are perfect for going anywhere, anytime, but come at the risk of accidents.

If you’re going to hire a motorbike, make sure you’re prepared. First and foremost, have some form of accident medical insurance.

To avoid having to pay roadside fines, international tourists are best served by having an “International Driver’s Permit” or at the very least a driver’s licence issued in your home country showing you are permitted to ride a motorbike. All drivers must carry their licences at all times when driving — no exceptions. Thais now have the benefit of using their new electronic driver’s licence recognised through the Department of Land Transport app.

Hiring a car makes a lot of sense for more risk-averse visitors and gives the freedom to roam off-island to enjoy the beauty of nearby locales. The same insurance and driver’s licence rules apply.

Local taxis and the iconic fourwheeled tuk-tuks are available. Much has been said about Phuket tuk-tuk drivers, but there are plenty of good guys. Just check and agree to the fare before getting in the car, then you can get started on one quintessential Phuket experience.

GrabTaxi is available on the island, with fares shown through the app before ordering your ride, for those who know where they’re going.
