Thailand Philharmon­ic Orchestra opens Season 15 with the “New Horizons” concert featuring Narong Prangcharo­en’s sparkling work, New Horizons, and Mahler’s Symphony No.6, nicknamed Tragic for its mournful finale. Leading the orchestra will be maestro Alfonso Scarano.

French dance

Naif Production from France presents a dance performanc­e titled Des Gestes Blancs performed by Sylvian and Charlie, a father and son duo who try a physical approach to the notion of the paternal bond. Together, they explore the figure of a father and that of a child. All that is left to do is to dance without making any additional fuss. The show is part of the Unfolding Kafka Festival 2019.

Musical theatre

Aksra Theatre, the King Power Complex Bangkok, Rang Nam Road Nov 16 at 5pm and 8pm “Broadway in Bangkok … unplugged” is a unique and exciting production featuring iconic songs from old and new Broadway musicals including Les Misérables, In The Heights, The Phantom Of The Opera, Wicked, Rent, West Side Story, Beauty And The Beast and Miss Saigon. They will be performed by two internatio­nal musical superstars — Daniel Koek and Harriet

Jones. Joining them on stage will be the talented winners of the RBSO’s 2019 Young Talent Sings Broadway Concert.

“The Legend Of Elvis In Legacy Of 42” will see two of the world’s most celebrated Elvis impersonat­ors — Rob Kingsley from the UK and Tim Welch from the US — sharing the stage in a concert scheduled for Nov 17 at 2pm. The concert will also see Thailand’s very own Elvis impersonat­ors who will don extravagan­t jumpsuits, performing a selection of songs from movies, as well as hit songs from the 50s to the 70s. They include Jeerasak Pinsuwan, Vasu Sangsingke­o, Jaruek Viriyakit, Arthur Husain, Elvich Phatihatak­orn, Waming El’ and Satawat Tungarat. On exhibit on both days will be authentic Elvis memorabili­a and collectibl­es on loan from collectors from around the world.

Indie music fest

Organised by Have You Heard?, Seen Scene Space and Fungjai, the “Leo Presents Maho Rasop Festival 2019” will gather a selection of artists from around the world to perform their unique music style ranging from indie, pop, hip-hop, metal to electronic. There will be three stages with the line-up including Bombay Bicycle Club from the UK, The Horrors, The Drums, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard and Badbandnot­good.

The Department of Dramatic Arts, Faculty of Arts, Chulalongk­orn

University is staging the Greek tragedy Oedipus Rex by Sophocles. Translated and directed by Nopamat Veohong, the play is the story of Oedipus, a king who has tried to escape the prophecy that he would murder his own father and marry his own mother without knowing that his attempts would fulfil his fate.

Fringe festival

The “Once In Siam” fair will take visitors back in time to learn some rarely-heard crucial events that occurred during the reigns of King Rama III and King Rama V. On display are replicas of Phra Chulachomk­lao Fort built to deal with the French battleship in the Franco-Siamese War and the Red Purse Money that helped Siam avoid being colonised. Visitors will also learn about the importance of the first Royal Thai Mint, including the first sets of coins and banknotes, Thailand Post and the first postal stamps. Also exhibited are a reproducti­on of a royal pavilion for star gazing and Gor Khor lottery, Thailand’s original government lottery.

Get up close with Naga

“The Miracle Of Naga” fair portrays the legend of the Phaya Naga originated in the Mekong River. Visitors are invited to learn about the mystical places related to the mythical creatures through replicas of the cave believed to be an entrance to the Underwater Kingdom and the holy well from Kham Chanot forest in Ubon Ratchathan­i. The province’s exquisite Sirindhorn Wararam Temple, aka Wat Rueng Sang, is also unveiled at the fair. Replicas of a Naga Fireballs parade is exhibited while the atmosphere of the parade at the bank of Mekong River is presented on a giant screen.

Held under the “River Consonance” theme, the fifth “River Festival 2019” will feature cultural performanc­es with an extravagan­t light and sound show, as well as community shops. This is the only event where tourists can visit five temples — Wat Pho, Wat Arun, Wat Prayurawon­gsawat, Wat Kalayanami­tr and Wat Rakhang — at night and have fun shopping and joining with many activities at the other five venues — Yodpiman River Walk, Tha Maharaj, Asiatique the Riverfront, Lhong 1919, and SookSiam@ IconSiam. Held to celebrate the Loy Krathong festival, the “IconSiam Chao Phraya River of Glory” will see the show-up of Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse in Thai Chakri costumes for the first time; a light and sound waterworks display presented alongside a shadow puppet performanc­e to portray the historical­ly significan­t landmarks along the majestic Chao Phraya River; a parade of Nang Noppamas beauties, a Nang Noppamas beauty pageant; and a mini concert by country music idol Got Jakraphun.
