A LACY CHRISTMAS

- STORY NIANNE-LYNN HENDRICKS

Keeping in the festive spirit of things, Thai artist Wannaprapa “Bua” Tungkasmith has brought the art of her paper designs to life through multiple touchpoints at The Peninsula Bangkok.

“As I am a paper-cut artist and love the shape of lace, which reminds me of snowflakes. Since it is also Christmas, I decided to combine the two.” “A Lacy Christmas”, Bua’s exhibition of paper cut-out art pieces, is on display in the lobby, near the elevator and in the artist studio until Jan 6, 2020.

Bua cuts an intricate world into and out of sheets of paper, transforming ordinary pages into beautiful cut-outs of botanicals, animals and lace. Aside from a Christmas tree and an advent calendar featuring “Stories From The Tree”, Bua has decorated the lobby with winter-inspired Christmas displays to add an extra touch of holiday joy. “When you are in holiday mode, you are lazy and need to recharge. In the studio, I show my work process and I have added a few gimmicks. I have cutout shirts and trousers and used it like my room at home. I have also cut the lace into the shape of paper.”

The delicate paper ornaments in the shape of a gingerbread man are illuminated on The Peninsula Bangkok’s Christmas tree. The proceeds of the sales from the gingerbread man ornaments will be donated to Operation Smile, a non-profit that provides surgeries to underprivileged children suffering from facial deformities. The gingerbread man ornament is priced at B1,000 and the limited edition design is priced at B2,500 per piece (five designs only).
