WINE ME DINE ME

- STORY KANKANOK WICHIANTANONON

OMG Bar & Restaurant serves Tex-Mex at affordable prices.

THE SETTING

Hidden away in Ratchadaphisek 3, OMG Bar & Restaurant is a compact outfit, seating about a handful of people. It looks simple enough from the outside, but step in and you’ll discover its playful spirit, as evidenced by vivid red walls with a large mural of famous movie figures together with the owner, holding food. The letters OMG are splattered across the walls. There are five tables with seven red stools attached to the bar counter, plus two tables outdoors. Though not fancy, this is a typical spot good for a casual night out.

THE MENU

Owner Gurdev “Guru” Singh Srikhandpur made his start catering Indian vegetarian food in Bangkok, before opening a bar/eatery on Rama IV, focusing on Japanese and fusion Chinese tapas to go with beer. It wasn’t until later that he changed the menu to Tex-Mex (a fusion of Mexican and American). He put his personal flair into dishes like succulent Chipotle hot wings with homemade ranch dressing (B139) and spicy Curry fries (B109), dotted with sliced bird eye chillies.

Apart from that, the menu sees a sufficient list of classics, like Fajitas with choices of Shrimp (B279) and Chicken (B259); Cheese quesadillas (B189), burritos and tacos. There are Veggie (B209), Chicken (B229), Beef (B259) and Breakfast Burritos (B269), while the tacos come with Fish (B229), Shrimp (B249), Beef (B209), Chicken (B189) and Veggie (B179).

Guru’s approach to food is fairly simple. There are a few strict policies he swears by: no ready-made spice mixes or sauces and no MSG. Chilli-heads can reach for the Holy ghost sauce (a house-made hot sauce made with 100% ghost peppers), which adds a fiery oomph to any dish.

As for the drinks, the list is pretty simple. There is Asahi beer on tap, along with three commercially popular beers in pint-sized cans: Leo (B90), Chang (B90) and My Beer (B90). A small selection of craft beers is also available, such as Siwilai (B100) and Mahanak

Mahanakhon (B100). If you’re feeling adventurous, try a special OMG cocktail called Tom

yum splash (B170), which I proudly recommend. Be sure to look out for special promos on their FB page before heading there, as OMG keeps rolling out new food deals, like Wicked Wednesday (buy 1 and get 1 free classic cocktail) and Magic Monday, that lets you buy 2 and get 1 free shochu highball all day.

INSIDER TIPS

Although, the menu is primarily Tex-Mex, OMG caters special dishes for people with certain cravings. Simply ask the restaurant to whip up what you want (Japanese food, even), and if he happens to have the ingredients, they just might! All the items on the menu can be modified to suit your tastes.

You should really try the “Red Hot” beef chimichanga (B309), which comes slathered in pungent spicy sauce and cheese, and is part of a secret menu.

VERDICT AND VALUE

OMG doles out simple Tex-Mex fare that is equivalent to what you can get at highpriced Mexican restaurants and is far better than Tex-Mex fast-food chains (you know who we’re talking about). Better yet, nothing on the menu will set you back more than B300, even though there is succulent beef involved.
