Tokyo Games live telecast plan unveiled

- TOR CHITTINAND

The National Broadcasting and Telecommunication Commission (NBTC) will be the official 2020 Tokyo Olympics broadcaster in Thailand, it was announced yesterday.

The live broadcasts will be available to the public on T-Sports TV channel, on-line via AIS Play app and also through “out of home” digital advertising displays in high-definition format throughout the country.

Minister of Tourism and Sports Pipat Ratchakijprakarn appreciated the arrangements for the live broadcasts of Tokyo 2020.

He told a press conference yesterday that the Thai athletes were focused on training for the Olympics despite the coronavirus fears.

“We regularly encourage our athletes to raise their standard so that they are able to compete at world-class events like the Olympic Games,” Pipat added.

Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT) Governor Dr Gongsak Yodmanee said besides helping the country’s athletes prepare for the Games, his organisation has also joined hands with the NBTC to ensure that the Thai public will get the best possible coverage of the Games.

“As for the Covid-19 health concerns, the SAT is not taking anything for granted and is trying to arrange full insurance covers for all Thai participants in the Olympic Games,” said Gongsak.

Maj Gen Charouek Ariratchakaran, secretary-general of the Olympic Committee of Thailand, said the OCT has been in regular contact with the IOC about the Covid-19 outbreak.

“At this moment, IOC president [Thomas Bach] is confident that the Tokyo Games will proceed as planned,” added the OCT secretary.

The Games are scheduled to take place from July 24-Aug 9. The Olympic torch was lit at a restricted ceremony in Greece yesterday.
