DETAILS THAT LODGE IN THE MIND
The new Glashütte Original watches are all about style and psyche
As colours stir emotions, faces of Glashütte Original’s timepieces emanate a psychological effect. The German watchmaker draws inspiration from nature in assigning vivid hues to the eye-catching dials.
The new PanoMaticLunar appeals with a dial in forest green, inspired by fir trees surrounding its manufactory, in Glashütte, nestled in a valley in the Ore Mountains, East Germany.
Although based in Pforzheim, Southwest Germany, in-house dialmakers have beautifully emulated the shades of the coniferous forest.
A closer look at the PanoMaticLunar reveals a colour gradient on the handcrafted dial, centred by an intense dark green, then gradually transitioning to black.
This dégradé effect is achieved by carefully spraying black lacquer on the outer edge of a dial blank, previously given a coat of galvanic nickel. The entire surface is then coated with transparent green lacquer for the colour gradient that makes each dial unique.
The model is designed with displays harmoniously positioned according to the Golden Ratio. The auxiliary dials for hours and minutes, and for small seconds are placed along a vertical axis within the left side. The Panorama Date appears at 4 o’clock while the moon phase display shines at 2 o’clock.
On the caseback, the sapphire crystal allows viewing the in-house-manufactured and exquisitely finished automatic winding movement.
The reinterpretation in forest green is presented in a 40mm stainless steel case, whereas a deep blue dial stands out on the red gold 2019 version — one of the “2020 Golden Balance” award winners, voted by readers of UhrenMagazin, Watchtime.net, Focus and

The PanoMaticLunar comes under the Pano collection, defined as the contemporary face of Saxon watchmaking, which dates back to 1845, when the first horological workshop was established in the mining town of Glashütte.
The fall of the Berlin Wall led to Germany’s reunification in 1990 and a new chapter for Glashütte Original in 1994. The brandname expresses its watchmaking roots and authenticity of the mechanical timepieces.
Its haute horlogerie takes on playful colours, enhanced by the sophisticated dégradé effect, for the 1960s- and 70s-inspired Vintage collection.
The limited-edition squared Seventies Chronograph Panorama Date pays tribute to the natural landscape surrounding Glashütte through a vibrant-green dial.
The round Sixties and Sixties Panorama Date Annual Editions 2019 are ablaze in orange. In contrast, the Sixties and Sixties Chronograph Annual Editions 2020 shimmer with a dial in cool glacier-blue, inspired by alpine scenery.
Dial blanks are first adorned with a delicate sunray finish before being pressed into the characteristic domed shape and given a galvanic nickel coating. The dégradé effect is achieved through a similar process, as in crafting the PanoMaticLunar’s green dial, but by spraying dark-blue lacquer and coating with glacier-blue lacquer instead.
Housed in a stainless steel case, the 39mm Sixties and 42mm Sixties Chronograph are equipped with in-house manufactured automatic movements, revealed through the domed sapphire crystal caseback.
