PAPER PERMANENT

-

TRAVELLING TREASURES / S.A.C. SUBHASHOK THE ARTS CENTRE / UNTIL AUG 9

This solo exhibition by Patipat “Tae” Chaiwitesh is largely inspired by the Qingming Festival, where paper offerings are burnt for the deceased, and his residency at Bamboo Curtain Studio in Taiwan, which he described as “going to an art camp” during the opening reception on Saturday. As part of his residency, he did a research on the local way of life within the area which led to his fascination with fire as a medium to send paper offerings into the afterlife. This results in a collection of artwork on display in two dark rooms, ranging from what looks like framed paper money, hashtags regarding air pollution during Qingming Festival in Taiwan made of ash collected from shrines, a hexagonal rotatable siam si drawer and a collection of Chinese talisman embroidered in a new colour scheme by Tajima embroidery machine. He wants to show you how items that are synonymous with one culture can be looked in a different light and turn throwaway items into something permanent.
