Bumrungrad upgrades cancer facility

-

Bumrungrad Hospital has upgraded its Horizon Cancer Center to attract more overseas patients in search of comprehensive care, highlighting multi-disciplinary teams of specialists and medical personnel with a particular expertise in cancer care.

The centre offers protection, screening, diagnosis, treatment, follow-up on results and possible complications, psychological care, nutrition, pain management and close monitoring of the recurrence of the disease.

In 2019, Horizon Cancer Center treated more than 24,000 cancer patients.

According to Bumrungrad data, cancer treatment was the top reason overseas patients visited the hospital in 2019, with the highest number of patients coming from Myanmar and the United Arab Emirates.

“With the advancement in technology and medical science of cancer treatment together with the expertise of doctors, the current fight against cancer has become even more effective,” said Narongsak Kiatikajornthada, director of the Horizon Cancer Center.

Various treatment methods and techniques are now available, such as laparoscopic surgery techniques for qualified lung or colorectal patients, Dr Narongsak said.

“Local excision for rectal cancer can eliminate defecation dysfunction and thus prevents the need for a permanent stoma bag or waste pouch,” he said. “This is in contrast to the radical surgery required in the past, which could have more serious surgical effects.”

Cancer is the leading cause of death worldwide, and the number of victims is increasing every year.

The World Health Organization found in 2018 there were 18.1 million new cancer cases and 9.6 million deaths from cancer.

In Thailand, the latest data from the Public Health Ministry shows about 120,000 new cases and 70,000 deaths from cancer each year, with the country’s five most prevalent types being liver, lung, breast, cervical and colorectal, accounting for 51.9% of all cancer cases.
