Bangkok to host 3 big events in Jan­uary

The Asian leg of the ad­justed BWF World Tour 2020 will now take place in Bangkok in Jan­uary next year, the Bad­minton World Fed­er­a­tion an­nounced yes­ter­day.

It will fea­ture two Su­per 1000 tour­na­ments, cul­mi­nat­ing with the BWF World Tour Fi­nals in three con­sec­u­tive weeks.

Asia Open I (Su­per 1000) will take place from Jan 12-17, Asia Open II (Su­per 1000) from Jan 19-24, and the BWF World Tour Fi­nals from Jan 27-31.

The de­ci­sion was an­nounced at a BWF coun­cil meet­ing on Thurs­day night. This means the 2020 sea­son will now fin­ish in Jan­uary 2021.

“It is a his­toric mo­ment for Thai­land to host tour­na­ments at this level for the first time,” Khun­y­ing Patama Leeswad­trakul, pres­i­dent of the

Bad­minton As­so­ci­a­tion of Tha­ialnd (BAT), said yes­ter­day.

The BWF and BAT, in col­lab­o­ra­tion with the Thai govern­ment, com­pleted a fea­si­bil­ity study to en­sure all par­ties can pro­vide a safe Covid-19 frame­work to stage the three tour­na­ments, the BWF said.
