Bangkok to host 3 big events in January
The Asian leg of the adjusted BWF World Tour 2020 will now take place in Bangkok in January next year, the Badminton World Federation announced yesterday.
It will feature two Super 1000 tournaments, culminating with the BWF World Tour Finals in three consecutive weeks.
Asia Open I (Super 1000) will take place from Jan 12-17, Asia Open II (Super 1000) from Jan 19-24, and the BWF World Tour Finals from Jan 27-31.
The decision was announced at a BWF council meeting on Thursday night. This means the 2020 season will now finish in January 2021.
“It is a historic moment for Thailand to host tournaments at this level for the first time,” Khunying Patama Leeswadtrakul, president of the
Badminton Association of Thaialnd (BAT), said yesterday.
The BWF and BAT, in collaboration with the Thai government, completed a feasibility study to ensure all parties can provide a safe Covid-19 framework to stage the three tournaments, the BWF said.
Patama thanked all parties concerned to help make this happen.
