ENTER THE WORLD OF THE FRENCH IMPRESSIONISTS
After fascinating art lovers in Thailand with two world-class multimedia exhibitions last year, River City Bangkok will start 2021 with another immersive art show that will take us into the glorious world of France in the 19th-century.
Kicking off tomorrow, “The Impressionists” will digitally present the life and works of 10 masters of impressionism in a symphony of light and sound.
The line-up includes Edouard Manet, Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, Auguste Renoir, Henri De
Toulouse-Lautrec, Henri Rousseau, Georges Seurat, Vincent Van Gogh, Paul Cezanne and Paul Gauguin.
Visitors will be immersed in the 19th-century art movement, a time when the 10 “rebels” were inspired to paint the world as they saw it and not as the establishment determined.
In their masterpieces, they captured the nature of everyday life on their canvases. They challenged the Académie des Beaux-Arts, the art institution of the day, and insisted on presenting their own view of the world.
The exhibition is divided into five parts, offering a glimpse into the life of the rebels of their time but who are now seen as masters of their era.
Rebels Of The Art World
Get to know the preferred artistic styles of France in the 19th-century — neoclassicism and romanticism — pre-determined by the Académie des Beaux-Arts. The impressionist movement began when a group of painters including Monet, Sisley and Renoir started painting outdoors rather than in a studio and capture the beauty of landscapes and scenes of everyday life.
Café Guerbois
Located at 11 Grande Rue des Batignolles in the hillside district of Montmartre, the cafe played a pivotal role in the formation of modern art. This is where the artists gathered to discuss their ideas.
The First Impressionist Exhibition 1874
Organised by Monet, Pissarro, Degas, Renoir, Sisley and Berthe Morisot, the exhibition displayed 165 works by 30 artists, however, it was deemed a failure as most people came to sneer and scoff at the works.
International Recognition
Impressionism was not popular until the works were brought to exhibit in New York in 1886 where wealthy Americans were first introduced to this modern French painting movement.
Walk Through Monet’s Garden
After impressionism attained recognition, Monet spent his final days in Giverny painting his world-renowned series Water Lilies.
The exhibition will conclude on April 18. The venue is the Museum of Digital Art (MODA) on the 2nd floor of River City Bangkok, Charoen Krung 24.
