FEAST FOR THE EYES
Digital Delicious, the latest addition to the Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit’s adventurous restaurant profiles provides a multi-sensory dining experience featuring interactive visualisations
Over the past years, Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit has been at the forefront of providing Bangkok’s epicurists with a sensational gastronomic experience.
Since 2015, the hotel has been the home of Dine In The Dark, the city’s only restaurant that is pitch black and sight-free. It is also the playground of Le Petit Chef, a thumb-sized 3D character from Belgium who takes diners through a uniquely-curated feast amid animated story-telling.
In 2018, Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit’s culinary team led by Italian executive chef Gaetano Palumbo provided a series of chef’s table meals for Dinner In The Sky, a pop-up restaurant suspended at a height of 50m above Earth’s surface by slings on a crane.
However, Digital Delicious is the latest addition to the hotel’s adventurous gourmet profile. The new restaurant is a multi-sensory dining experience stimulated by 4D projection mapping and interactive visualisations.
A brainchild of Thailand’s leading digital art creator, Doozy Digilab, the new restaurant blends various fun-filled optical illusions and video technology with a four-course fine dining cuisine.
Housed in a space that was previously the home of Basil Thai restaurant, the 20-seater Digital Delicious immediately wows guests with a spectacular space-like entryway.
Behind the entrance is a dimly-lit dining room where a long communal table is placed amid a changing video mapping ambience.
The glass-top dining table is in fact a multi-touch screen which you can interact and play with. Moreover, the walls and plates are also interactive and the table also serves as a display surface of high-resolution aerial imagery.
My meal began with a theme dubbed Castle In The Sky. As the surroundings mimicked an exquisite mansion, a gorgeous platter of trio bite-sized starters was served.
The starters contained a beetroot kataifi with rock lobster medallion, burrata and yuzu; a chocolate hazelnut foie gras “rocher”; and a warm deep-fried mozzarella ball with black truffle, all of which were delicious.
Then, the ambience changed to a multi-coloured visualisation to match the next story: The Garden Of Dreams.
Complementing the vibrant flower-themed table, a lively jungle background and a peace-loving narrative was, ironically, a game dish.
Chef Palumbo’s rendering of venison — sorry poor deer — with Romanesco broccoli, persimmon mustard, raspberry and mushroom consommé was so impeccably prepared and scrumptious that I spared my merciful feeling.
A dish of plankton risotto with grilled octopus, crispy Italian black rice, salicornia (marsh samphire) and red amaranth represented the third course surrounded by gesture-controlled graphics of sea creatures under the Deep Blue Sea concept.
The meal wrapped up with an imaginative Space Odyssey-themed dessert resembling a galaxy rock with dark chocolate mousse, apricot and caramel sauce.
There is also a kid-friendly and vegetarian menu available. The latter features dishes such as pumpkin and cauliflower with quinoa, goat cheese yoghurt and basil pesto; and risotto with roasted onion, artichoke and seaweed dust.
Prices are 3,050 baht net per person for lunch and 3,870 baht net per person for dinner. An afternoon tea set costs 1,950 baht per person.
