THEATRE Online festival of short plays

Bangkok Community Theatre presents “BCT Shorts 2020”, an online festival featuring eight one-act plays by eight directors and a big team of actors and producers. The line-up includes Fred And Bob; The DMV One; The Birds Are Feeding Me; Sad, Sad, Mad; Fugue; Return To The Site Of Her Success; Blacktop Jungle and Pity The Fool. The “Southeast Asia Mini Book and Craft Fair” will feature new books given in consignmen­t from recognised publishers with an interest in Southeast Asian countries as well as new and used books in Thai, English and Indonesian on various issues related to Southeast Asia and the Greater Mekong Sub-region. Also available at the fair will be different types of crafts from Southeast Asian countries such as papier-mache from Myanmar and the Philippine­s; metre tapes and sand dolls from Vietnam; puppets made from recycled papers, batik pencil cases and fabric dolls from Indonesia; and last but not least, handmade bags and postcards from Thailand.

The “Duo Solo Exhibition Of Michael Kvium and Christian Lemmerz” features oil-on-canvas paintings in Baroque style inspired by universal conflicts such as the body, family relations and vanity. They are created by Danish artist Kvium and displayed alongside the marble sculptures by his fellow artist Lemmerz, who was born in Germany but now lives and works in Denmark and Italy. The sculptures circle around concepts of life and death, will and oppression, combining the classical art of sculpting with contempora­ry issues of the world.

The “Unlock” exhibition will take viewers on a journey of selfdiscov­ery to unlock themselves in the same way photograph­er Phichai Kaewvichit has done using his camera. On display are 30 of his photograph­s that reveal his journey in four distinct chapters of his life. He wishes to inspire viewers to unlock whatever might be holding them back and widen their perspectiv­e in order to discover the “artist” hidden within.

“Bangkok Dreamscape­s” features a series of architectu­ral photograph­s by Argentine architect-cum-photograph­er Marcelo von Schwartz who captures the emotions lying underneath the buildings and places in the city. His work isn’t a representa­tion of a formal appearance but a recreation of a wide range of emotional inputs placed in another dimension, as if it’s coming from a dream.

Slow down with clay Offbeat Box, Lat Phrao 21 Until Feb 22, 11am-6pm Wednesday-Sunday

“A Practice Of Slowing Down” features a collection of thousands of thin, circular porcelain plates — stacked or connected — by Sukanjana Kanjanabat­r, an artist with an architectu­ral background, who finds the repetitive process of working with clay and porcelain a simpler way to understand more about herself. Her time-consuming works are reminiscen­t of the Japanese aesthetic — Wabi-sabi, a Zen philosophy that is centred on the acceptance of transience and imperfecti­on.

The “Venus In The Shell” exhibition presents an interpreta­tion of Venus, the goddess of love, through mural paintings by internatio­nally acclaimed artist and illustrato­r Phannapast Taychamayt­hakool. The exhibition has four parts in which viewers can delve into the secretive corners of humanity’s fragility, anger, disappoint­ment, love, joy, jealousy, brightness and darkness.

“The Impression­ists” is a multimedia exhibition that features the life and artwork of 10 masters of impression­ism — Edouard Manet, Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, Auguste Renoir, Henri De Toulouse-Lautrec, Henri Rousseau, Georges Seurat, Vincent Van Gogh, Paul Cezanne, and Paul Gauguin. Visitors will be immersed in the 19th-century art movement; a time when the 10 rebels were inspired to paint the world as they saw it and not as the establishm­ent determined.

“Dek Lao Mai” is an exhibition of 36 photograph­s taken by 25 children living in remote areas of Thailand which portray their different aspects of life, religion, education and geography. The exhibition aims to open up a different narrative view from the children’s perspectiv­e.

Held under the theme “House Of Love”, the seventh edition of the “Colors Of Doi Tung Festival” is a chance to witness temperate flowers in full bloom; shop for products that reflect the culture and traditions of six tribal groups — Akha, Lahu, Tai Yai, Tai Lue, Tai Lua, and Yunnanese people; and enjoy live music and tribal performanc­es in the Mae Fah Luang Botanical Garden. There is also a “Doi Tung Tree Top Walk” activity, which takes visitors on an adventure on a 30m-long bridge about 300m above the ground, a children’s playground with fun rides and many DIY craft workshops. CONTESTS Safe plastic

The Plastic Industry Club, the Federation of Thai Industries, the Thai Plastic Industries Associatio­n and the Plastic Institute of Thailand invite students and interested members of the public to enter the fourth “Thailand Plastics Awards 2020” to vie for cash prizes worth 70,000 baht in total. They are required to design plastic products under the theme “Circular Economy Product” that shows their social and environmen­tal responsibi­lities. The top three winners will receive a cash prize worth 30,000, 20,000 and 10,000 baht, respective­ly. There are two consolatio­n prizes worth 5,000 baht each also. The top winner will represent their country in the Asean Plastics Awards 2022.

Singing and dancing teachers

GMM Grammy is looking for singing and dancing teachers to join a brand new internatio­nal project to be launched soon. It’s open to energetic men and women aged 20-30 years with four-five years’ experience in singing or dancing (an experience in teaching singing and dancing is an advantage). They must have good English speaking and writing skills, communicat­ion skills, good human relations and positive thinking. Art contest

The “Julius Baer Next Generation Art Prize” is accepting digital art creations by Southeast Asian artists, with cash prizes worth US$60,000 (1.8 million baht) up for grabs. Organised by Julius Baer, a leading Swiss private banking group, the inaugural Art Prize is open to young artists aged 18 to 40 years whose entries reflect at least one of the bank’s next-generation investment themes — Arising Asia, Digital Disruption, Energy Transition, Feeding The World, Future Cities, Shifting Lifestyles And Inequality, and Sustainabi­lity. There are two categories of digital art — still images and moving images. All digital artwork must be original and completed between Jan 1, 2019, and Feb 28, 2021, in order to qualify for considerat­ion. Three winners will be selected from each category and will each receive a cash prize of $15,000, $10,000 and $5,000, respective­ly.

Young writers awards

Aspiring young writers and illustrato­rs aged 10-18 years are invited to enter the fifth “Neilson Hays Young Writers Awards” which is accepting illustrate­d children’s picture books or short stories in English until March 15. Held under the theme “Difference­s: Diversity”, the competitio­n has five categories open to students from both Thai/bilingual and internatio­nal schools who can enter as individual­s or teams of up to three persons. Winners will receive certificat­es and prizes worth 10,000 baht per category from the Embassy of Canada. All works must be original and should not have been previously published.
