Season starts with Boonchu title for Poom

Poom Pattaropon­g fired a final round 65 to win by one shot at the Boonchu Ruangkit Championsh­ip 2021 in Nakhon Ratchasima yesterday.

Trailing the leader by a shot after round three, Poom closed with a six-under-par 65 to win the seasonopen­ing All Thailand Golf Tour event on 27-under 257 at the par-71 Rancho Charnvee Resort & Country Club in Khao Yai.

Sadom Kaewkanjan­a was second on 26-under 258 following his finalround 65. The two-time ATGT winner finished a shot ahead of third-placed Settee Prakongvec­h, who closed with a three-under 68.

“This was my first tournament this year and I didn’t expect to be in this position because I didn’t play well last year,” said Poom, whose round included an eagle and four birdies.

“It was not until the eagle on the 14th that I felt comfortabl­e today.”

Poom took home 600,000 baht at the four-million baht tournament, the first event on the All Thailand Golf Tour 2021. Sadom got 380,000 baht while Settee received 220,000 baht.

First-round leader Natipong Srithong closed with a 67 to finish tied for fourth on 22 under with Atiruj Winaicharo­enchai (65) and Kwanchai Tannin (66).

World No.172 Gunn Charoenkul, who fired a 61 to lead by one shot after three rounds, was joint seventh on 21 under with Thanyakorn Khrongpha (62), Thaworn Wiratchant (64) and Tirawat Kaewsiriba­ndit (65).

In his profession­al debut, Denwit David Boriboonsu­b finished 11th after posting a 67 for 20-under 264.

Defending champion Pavit Tangkamolp­rasert (71) and 2019 winner Itthipat Buranatany­arat (64) shared 24th on 15 under with Amarin Kraivixien (64), Rattanon Wannasrich­an (70) and Sarit Suwannarut (70).

Thongchai Jaidee shot a closing 67 to share 29th with England’s Matt Killen (69).

The next leg of the All Thailand Golf tour will be the three-million baht E-San Open at Singha Park Khon Kaen Golf Club on April 22-25.
