The “2021 Golden Pin Design Award (GPDA)”, one of the many iconic annual design awards held in Asia, is calling for entries to provide a great opportunity for design talents from across the world to showcase their products and projects that cater specifically to Asian societies.

Executed by the Taiwan Design Research Institute (TDRI) and organised by the Industrial Development Bureau, Ministry of Economic Affairs, Taiwan, the competition is one of Asia’s most authoritative and influential design awards that has played a significant role in boosting the value of quality design on the international stage.

Launched in 1981, the award recognises commercial products and projects submitted by design teams and industry professionals into four categories — product design, communication design, spatial design, and integration design.

Designers of award-winning products and projects will have the opportunity to make sales online at the Design Pin store and be included in an online exhibition on the GPDA website, with a chance to showcase their works at the Taiwan Design Museum, the world’s first specialised museum among all Chinese-speaking communities dedicated to showcasing creative design.

They will also have access to advisory and matchmaking services with interdisciplinary experts in order to deliver innovations, breakthroughs, or applications.

Over the past few years, Thailand’s design entries have stolen the spotlight in the Golden Pin Design Award, with 19 entries awarded the Design Marks last year.

Each year, design experts from all over the world are invited to come to Taiwan for selection and this year’s jury will include two professionals from Thailand — graphic designer Tnop Wangsillapakun (founder of TNOP Design) and industrial designer Ratthee Phaisanchotsiri (director of Satawat Design).

Design entries must already be commercialised in the market and the applicants must be business entities or design teams.

The early bird registration fee is NT$3,500 (3,730 baht) per entry until May 31. General registration starts from June 1 to 30 with the fee of NT$5,000 per entry.

Thai participants presenting the first 70 Thailand designs will be able to register free of charge. However, they are required to initially send an email of interest to gpaward@tdri.org.tw. Entries entitled to the fee waiver will receive a formal reply from the TDRI.
