During the traditional Thai New Year, you may be looking for a chance to make merit. Green Road project invites those who are interested in supporting kids in remote areas to buy its recycled flip-flops. All proceeds will be used for building playgrounds in two schools in Tak.
The primary schools, Tee Chi Lor Khi and Ban Huai Phlu, are located not far from the border between Thailand and Myanmar in Tha Song Yang and Mae Ramat districts, respectively. The schools need proper playgrounds to replace dirt playgrounds before the rainy season.
You can contribute to the Green Road project initiated by Asst Prof Wechsawan Lakas, a lecturer at the Industrial Technology Department of the Science and Technology Faculty of Chiang Mai Rajabhat University. He introduced the Green Road project years ago to reduce single-use plastic bags by turning them into recycled bricks and roads.
A couple of years ago, he introduced recycled flip-flops to the project. The aim is to make the most use of leftover ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) rubber sheets that are used for making soles. The foam scraps are shredded and remade to be “Green Road” flip-flops for kids and adults.
A pair of recycled flip-flops are priced at 199 baht. The project also has a special edition Covid-19 sole as a memory for the pandemic. The price is 399 baht. You can also buy the slippers for donation. Wechsawan will donate them to kids in a remote area on Children’s Day next year. The donation for the school playground project is open until the middle of May.
