PRO MUSICA TO PERFORM ICONIC QUARTETS OF TWO MASTERS
Pro Musica Quartet will give two rounds of “The Early String Quartets” concert featuring Haydn’s and Mozart’s early string quartets at Neilson Hays Library, Surawong Road, on April 23 and 24 at 7.30pm.
Hailed as “Father Of The String Quartet” for bringing the quartet to prominence, Haydn composed a total of 68 string quartets that are considered ingenious, charming and, at times, dramatic. He influenced some of the most well-known composers in history, including Mozart, who dedicated six quartets to him, known as The Haydn Quartets.
The repertoire on both evenings will feature Haydn’s Op 20, which he composed in 1772 at the age of 40, and Op 33, written nine years later. While the latter is known for its maturity, the first is credited with establishing the form of the modern string quartet.
Inspired by Haydn’s quartets, Mozart produced two brilliant sets of six quartets while still in his teens, The Milanese Quartets and the Viennese Quartets. Pro Musica Quartet will perform one of the Viennese Quartets he composed in 1773, at the age of 17. This is a rare opportunity to listen to a delightful programme rendered by Leo Phillips (violin), Jirajet Jetsadachet (violin), Tasana Nagavajara (viola) and Panyaphat Wongwechwiwat (cello).
Tickets cost 600 baht (500 baht for library members and 200 baht for students) and can be purchased from neilsonhayslibrary.org. They will not be available for purchase at the door. Seats will be limited to respect social distancing rules.
