Demand for traditional herb soars

Demand for green chiretta, or fah talai jone herb, is increasing amid skyrocketing Covid-19 infections, causing supplies to run out.

People are stocking up on the herb as hospital beds are full and the state’s vaccination programme faces hurdles. The Corrections Department earlier said the herb was effective in treating infected inmates with mild symptoms.

The Chaophraya Abhaibhubejhr Hospital Foundation said orders for green chiretta products are on the rise amid an increase in daily new Covid19 cases, and stocks are running out so many customers are unable to order or purchase the herb through multiple channels.

The foundation has provided some of the products to patients in critical condition nationwide, it said. It said on its Facebook page that it is expediting the herb’s production process while maintaining its quality.

The foundation wants to secure the herb for patients, while people who want to boost their immunity can take fingerroot, turmeric, ginger and Indian gooseberry.

Justice Minister Somsak Thepsutin said the ministry will set up a panel to promote the planting of herbs in prisons as correctional facilities nationwide have surplus space, while inmates can take the opportunity to learn new skills.

He said green chiretta and other herbs have become economic plants, so prisons can help boost supplies. Private and state firms can help market the herbal products, he added.
