Platform nets 1.5m learners

More than 1.5 million people have registered with the Thailand Massive Open Online Course Platform (Thai MOOC), a lifelong learning platform, said deputy government spokeswoman Rachada Dhnadirek yesterday.

Thai MOOC, under the management of the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation, aims to provide open-access courses in various fields.

Anyone can apply for the courses on the platform, and certificates are given to those who complete them, she said.

“The platform has 589 courses. This year, the number of registered students has climbed to 1.5 million, up from 800,000 last year.”

She said the most popular course is English for Communication, with 178,180 registered students.

Thai MOOC has been available for six years, featuring international collaborations from universities, the public sector and private entities, she noted.

Many language courses are linked with institutions overseas, such as Korean classes with Sungkyunkwan University in South Korea and Japanese with Kyushu University in Japan, she said.

Cross-cultural Psychology in the Workplace, Basic English, Psychology and Everyday Life, Korean I and II, Blockchain Technology and Bitcoin are among the most popular course titles, she added.

The platform hopes to achieve the goals listed in the National Digital Economy and Society Development Plan and Policy, helping Thai workers by providing upskilling and reskilling courses, she said.

“The government is supporting a life-long learning platform led by educational institutions and members of the public and private sectors,” she said. “Thais can access up-to-date knowledge from experts without paying any fees.”
