Sasa to build Turkey’s first PTA facility

-

Sasa TURKISH INDUSTRY COMPANY Polyester signed a new agreement with the Spanish Technicas Reunidas for the first pure terephthalic acid (PTA) factory of Turkey, to be built in Adana. The PTA facility, on 350 acres, will have 1.5 million tonnes of capacity. With the facility, which is scheduled to launch in two years, the companies hope to eliminate a billion liras in imports annually. PTA is used as a raw material in polyethylene terephthalate (PET) production, a key component in polyester thread, as well as for the textile, health, hygiene and packaging industries.

The two companies pressed the start button for the investment of the new PTA project with the agreement signed by Ibrahim Erdemoglu, Chairman of Erdemoglu Holding, and Juan Llado, President of Tecnicas Reudinas. The project, worth USD 935m, is one of the most aggressive moves by Erdemoglu Holding in its history. The official groundbreaking of the facility is expected to take place in May and construction is expected to be completed in 27 months. The production space of Sasa will increase to 1,500 acres with the investment. Sasa will become the third-largest PTA producer in the world, after China and India. The project will also be the first step of the planned petrochemical investment in Adana. “The pandemic showed us that countries are prioritizing domestic production,” Erdemoglu said. “In this regard, the PTA facility will make significant contributions to its sector.”
