THE FLOWER GARDEN OF THE MEDITERRANEAN: ANTALYA
Welcome to Antalya, the capital of tourism in Turkey, with its unique geographic structure, rich culture, and deep-rooted history.
Surların çevrelediği tarihî limanın arkasına kurulmuş olan Kaleiçi, sadece çiçek açan dar sokaklarıyla değil bu sokakların asıl sahipleri olan Looking at the historical gate built in honor of the Roman Emperor Hadrian in AD 130, I cannot but think how the architect labored to please the emperor who was also interested in architecture. Considering the wandering emperor -who oversaw the public works carried out in the cities of the empire in person with an entourage well versed in architecture, engineering, and fine artsit’s not hard to imagine what a painstaking procedure it must have been for the city’s rulers. Fortunately, the final structure had them heave a sigh of relief with its splendor. With its facade made up of two columns and its three arches rising above four gate towers, bearing the appearance of a typical Roman triumphal arch, on the second floor of this gate that is not extant today, stood the statues of the emperor and his family.
It is considered one of the most important reminders of the Pax Romana. Entering Kaleiçi (Citadel) from under the vaults of the gate adorned with floral and vegetal reliefs from the surrounding fauna of Antalya, I was unaware of the extraordinary landscape I would behold.
The citrus trees, bougainvillea, ivies, and flowers particular to Antalya that draw my attention as I first set foot on the streets of Kaleiçi seem to announce that I have entered the city from the right gate. Isn’t it a nice greeting? As I stroll along the streets winding down Kaleiçi, where flowers are an essential part of everyday life, it is delightful to learn that having been deemed worthy of the “Cities in Bloom” Award, Antalya is also one of the most prominent cities in flower exports.
Set up behind the historical harbor surrounded by walls, Kaleiçi is visually appealing with its narrow streets in bloom and its bay-windowed houses, the real owners of these streets. Most of these endearing houses, which serve
Günümüzün as boutique hotels, restaurants, antique dealers and souvenir shops, reflect the lifestyles, traditions, and customs of Antalya’s residents in the best way possible. Built with layered stone and wooden frames, the ground levels of these generally three-storied houses are the “service” areas where daily chores were carried out -much like their counterparts in Göynük and Odunpazarı-, and the upper floors extended over corbels were the living quarters.
I meet Antalya’s handicrafts like handwoven carpets and rugs, ceramics, and cotton weaving in the shops that extend from the harbor to the city walls. Having something to eat and relaxing on my mind, I order tea for myself sitting down in one of the surrounding cafés when I reach the marina. Watching the boats slowly rocking in the sea, I wonder who has passed from this harbor which was once the headquarters of Pompeius’s fleet and then a lair of pirates. Then I recall that not only the Gelidonya shipwreck, that is to say one of the oldest shipwrecks in history which I saw at the Bodrum Underwater Archaeology Museum, but also the remains of the oldest lighthouse are found in
Patara. I consider Antalya to be more than just a city with its unique riches, all of which can stand as symbols of the city; for instance, the dockyard of the Seljuk era, its beaches that stretch out as far as the eye can see, its waterfalls, or its ancient cities built like architectural masterpieces. For a last stop, I visit the Antalya Toy Museum established by the Metropolitan Municipality in Kaleiçi. After seeing the toys that shaped how children viewed the world, enriched their imagination, and, in a sense, witnessed the times long before electronic toys came to rule the market, I take the lift
31 yıllık bir hukuk mücadelesi sonucunda vatanına dönen Perge Herkülü ya da daha bilinen adıyla Yorgun Herkül heykeli, elbisesi ile bedeni farklı renkte mermerlerden yapılan Dansöz heykeli, varını yoğunu Perge’ye harcayan nearby the museum to visit the city’s most well recognized structure -the Yivli Minaret Religious Complex. The lift that goes up to the Tophane tea garden from the marina leads me with minimum effort to the Yivli Minaret Religious Complex.
The Yivli Minaret is an elegant structure with its 8 fluted, half-cylinder cinctures and turquoise glazed tiles placed upon an ashlar square stone. Its figure, a feast for the eyes seems to say “I’m the symbol of this city.” Designed as a monument to symbolize the dominion of the Seljuks during Alaeddin I’s time, the minaret forms a religious complex with the Ulu Mosque, Ulu Mosque Madrasah, Atabey Armağan Madrasah, Antalya Mawlavi Lodge, Zincirkıran Mehmet Bey, and Nigar Hatun mausoleums. Before leaving the Kaleiçi region, I take a selfie in front of the statue of Pergamon King Attalos II, who seems to watch over the city he has given his name to in silence, right across from the historical clock tower. Now I can pass over to the Antalya Archaeology Museum to trace the city’s past.
Museum abounding in treasures
The Antalya Archaeology Museum draws attention with its magnificent sculpture collection displaying unique examples such as the Hercules of Perge, or as it better known Tired Hercules, that was reclaimed by its hometown following a legal struggle of 31 years; the Dancer, whose body and dress are made of different colored marbles; the statue of Plancia Magna, the woman mayor who magnanimously dedicated her wealth to Perge; the ruthless ruler Caracalla’s sole statue in the world; as well as artifacts
Antalyalıların from significant civilizations like the Lycians, Pamphylians, and inhabitants of Side.
The museum also houses the Elmalı Treasure, which boasts sarcophaguses that leave you awestruck by their elaborate workmanship and some of the few decadrahms found today. In 1998, the museum was given the European Museum of the Year Award (EMYA) by the European Museum Forum (EMF). After taking a look at the shop that displays publications and souvenirs related to Antalya Museum, I leave to head over to Konyaaltı.
Konyaaltı Beach, a coastline right at the heart of the city, with its 7 kilometers length and dazzling environmental planning, is covered in pebbles. Considering it’s not the swimming season, and there’s not a soul around, there is no reason not to go on a walk in this peaceful atmosphere where you can inhale the fresh air. Completed in the recent past, the environmental planning of Boğaçayı, which is referred to by the residents of Antalya as a diamond necklace, presents a magnificent visual feast.
And what’s more, this road leads you to the cable car that will take you to Tünektepe, where you can enjoy bird’s eye-view sceneries of Antalya. Those who would like to cycle this road can rent a bicycle from the bicycle rental station of the Metropolitan Municipality.
To start my second day from where I left off, I take the cable car to Tünektepe. After relishing in a light breakfast while enjoying the sea view at this popular local spot, my next stop is the Lower Düden Waterfall located in a park on the west side of Lara, 8
“Tüm Kabileler” anlamına kilometers away, and which joins the blue of the sea from approximately 40 meters. After this visual feast and even though I’m not really hungry, it’s time to try a delicacy that I cannot leave Antalya without savoring.
The tahini piyaz of Antalya is known to almost all but it is all the more delightful to taste it along with the meatballs at the famous grill house of Ibo. After tasting the piyaz and meatballs, I’m convinced that residents of Antalya are gourmets. Now that both my eyes and stomach have had their fill, I can head over to the Pamphylian cities of Perge, Aspendos, and Side, the real sources of the artifacts I beheld in awe the day before. Situated in the Aksu district, Perge was one of Anatolia’s most important sculpture workshops along with Aphrodisias. As I visit Perge, I can’t but think that even if there had been no sculptures, the city would still have drawn attention to itself with its theater, agora, stunning monumental gates, and most importantly the urban planning that was meticulously designed. In Pamphylia, which means “All Clans,” my second stop, Aspendos, was famous for its aqueducts and its still extant theater, which is almost in its original form. I will give you the chance to
Attalos’un “Bana dünyanın en güzel yerini bulun.” sözü üzerine akıncılarının neden Antalya’yı işaret ettikleri çok açık, değil mi? discover the history of these monumental structures and their corresponding legends on site. The only thing I regret after visiting the theater that was saved for posterity by being employed as a caravanserai by the Turks, is not being able to see a show here.
Side, my last stop, like Aspendos, is also a city that is famous for its theater. What distinguishes the
Side Theater, which can seat 20,000 spectators, from the others is that it was not built on the slope of a mountain like Roman theaters but on totally flat land. As I stroll around
Side, built over the remains of antiquity, coming by a historical structure on every street, I feel as if I’m a time traveler.
Having come all the way to Side, can one leave without seeing Manavgat? When you are so close? I sit down at one of the tables in the tea garden set up in the lush green area beside the banks of the waterfall to watch the burbling of the Manavgat Waterfall over the cliffs. The waterfall gets all its might when the Manavgat Brook meets the river bubbling up from the depths of the earth in an underground cave and joining the waters called “Dumanlı” (Misty). My excursion in Antalya, which holds enough riches to fill pages, ends here by the side of the peaceful purr of the waterfall. Getting to know its cordial people, ancient cities, monumental structures, waterfalls, beaches, and delicious meals, I understand why Antalya is the capital of tourism. Isn’t it quite obvious why the raiders pointed to Antalya when Pergamon King Attalos II said, ‘’Find me the most beautiful place in the world’’?
