Daha birçok ilke imza atan Cecan’ın 1988 yılında Haluk Cecan is the first person that comes to mind when you say underwater documentary in Turkey. He was devoted from a tender age to the sea and saw marine creatures as his friends.
Born in 1946 in Istanbul, Cecan graduated from the Faculty of Economics at Istanbul University; his mind, however, was always on the mysterious world of the underwater. He lived in Moda Mühürdar, by the seaside. At every chance he got, he’d put on his diving mask with two breathing tubes and dive into the water. He shot his first film with 8 mm cameras when he was only 18. No doubt, the means to shoot movies in those days were quite different to what we have today. Despite the impracticalities and hardships of the era, Haluk Cecan enjoyed being at sea and made sacrifices towards that end. For instance, he had his films developed abroad despite the extra expenses and the risk of his films getting lost along the way. He overcame all obstacles one by one. In the 80s, starting to shoot long-feature documentary movies with the Betacam he purchased, Haluk Cecan took his endeavors in relation to underwater one step further by making his first video cabin. Having left his signature in many groundbreaking works,

Her türlü olumsuzlukta dahi olumlu düşünmeyi başarabilen “su altının şövalyesi”, 2004 yılında yakalandığı akciğer zarı kanserine rağmen, son ânına kadar film çekmeye devam eder. 2007 yılında hayata gözlerini yuman Cecan belgeselleri ve felsefesiyle yaşamaya devam ediyor. environmental pollution in his movies, and discussed what should and shouldn’t be done regarding the issue. He filmed documentaries in which he approached natural and environmental issues with a fantastic narrative that appealed to children and youths. For example, the movie “Dinosaur”: Produced in 1996, the movie tells the story of how the appearance of a huge creature in a remote spot of the world causes people to rush there, which results in the devastation of the underwater world. In the movie, he brought forth issues like trawling, beam trawling, the use of dynamite, and poaching. “Dinosaur”, which was shot in the Red Sea and Ayvalık, brought him awards at international film festivals held in France, Spain, the Czech Republic, and Tunisia. The film also received the Bronze Seahorse award given to the most interesting and technically advanced movies in Slovakia, the Tatras award for focusing on environmental issues, and the Jury Special Award. Haluk Cecan’s motto in life was “Life is a day and that day is today.” “The Knight of the Underwater” was able to think positively even in the face of negativity. Despite being diagnosed with pleura cancer in 2004, he continued to shoot movies until his last moment. The legacy of Cecan, who passed away in 2007, goes on in the documentaries and life philosophy.
