EFSANELERİN GERÇEĞE DÖNÜŞTÜĞÜ YER ÇANAKKALE THE PLACE WHERE LEGENDS BECOME REALITY
Çanakkale is a city that can be enjoyed throughout the year. But in March, the impression of tracing the thousands-year-old past leaves a whole different imprint on the soul.
Burada 18 Mart 1915’te Boğaz’ı geçip İstanbul’a ulaşmayı hedefleyen müttefik donanmasıyla cesurca mücadele eden

Seyit Onbaşı, anlatılanlara In the flow of time, there are cities that lose nothing of their luminescence… Those that are cited in the travel books of travelers with striking words, leave their mark in world history with legendary wars, have a sea passing through their heart, and enlighten the soul getting you to say, “Thank Heavens, I’m here!”… Just like Çanakkale! On a windy March morning, I’m in the aura of that wooden horse, the star of the famous Hollywood blockbuster which seems to have jumped out of a mythological universe, encompassed within the Aegean clouds. All cities sound different; the sound of Çanakkale is veritably a “morning symphony” born out of the thundering resonance of the ferry that tears the sea and the shrieks of the seagulls lingering in the sky. As the calendar shows March
18, the anniversary of the Çanakkale Victory, I arrive at the Kilitbahir jetty after a ferry trip where everyone greets one another with warm smiles.
On the trails of the Çanakkale heroes
The early rays of the sun, light up the Gelibolu Peninsula with every passing minute.
All corners of this green peninsula, which closely embraces the sea, carry trails of the Çanakkale War. Gelibolu has become an openair museum that grows each day with the establishment of the Directorate of the Çanakkale Battles and Gelibolu Historical National Park. To track the traces of the heroes, I head for the Rumeli Mecidiye Bastion and the Martyrs’ Cemetery, mentioned by Corporal Seyit who is identified with the Çanakkale War. There is a monument erected in honor of Corporal Seyit and the Mehmetçik, our heroic ranks who bravely fought the fleet of allies trying to pass the strait to get to Istanbul on March 18, 1915. According to what was relayed, starting his military service as “Heavy

Abidesi!
Merkezin 11 farklı canlandırma odası var; ikisinde üç boyutlu gösterim, üçünde de hareketli platformlarla savaşın kırılma noktaları 63 dakikalık gösterimle ziyaretçilere Artillery Private,” Corporal Seyit fed a shell weighing 215 kg into a chamberlain when the crane broke and firing it sunk the British Battleship. The backdrop of such an extraordinary event, the Rumeli Mecidiye Bastion is one of the places in Gelibolu that teems with visitors. Following the bastion, it’s time to visit the Soğanlıdere Valley where soldiers were provided with healthcare support, Alçıtepe Martyrs’ Cemetery, and Seddülbahir Castle where the first martyrs of the Çanakkale Front are buried. And, then, the Çanakkale Martyrs’ Memorial, reaching up to the skies at Cape Eskihisarlık, where we commemorate our martyrs each year! With each and every breath I take, the striking reality of war with all its rage tears my heart out once again. The legend of salvation that retreats itself in the tranquility of the green seems to arise from the depths of the peninsula to carry me away... I drop by the Legend of Çanakkale Promotion Center which makes you feel the fighting spirit to the hilt. Here, I examine the area where the objects used during the Çanakkale War are displayed; canteens, medals, binoculars, uniforms, all the real relics of the nation’s great struggle… After this emotional section of the Legend of Çanakkale Promotion Center, I head toward the experiential halls that transport the audience to the chaotic atmosphere of the war with advanced simulation techniques. The center has 11 different reenactment rooms; two of them have
3-D displays, and three present the breaking points of the war to the visitors with a 63-minute-long
sunuluyor. Alışılmışın dışında bir müze deneyimi sunan merkez, zamanı askıya almış Gelibolu’nun Çanakkale Savaşları’na aralanmış kapısı gibi bir etki uyandırıyor.
“Denizin kilidi”
Bir sonraki durağım savaşın seyrini değiştiren Conkbayırı. Gelibolu Yarımadası bu noktada bütün zarafetiyle önümde. Anafartalar Grup Komutanı Yarbay Mustafa Kemal’in heykeline sırtımı verip ufka dalıyorum.
Offering an extraordinary museum experience, the center leaves an impression of being a time-suspended gate to the Çanakkale War.
“The lock of the sea”
My next stop is Conkbayırı, which changed the course of the war. Gelibolu Peninsula is right before me in all its grace. Leaning to the statue of Anafartalar Group Commander Lieutenant Colonel Mustafa Kemal, I gaze out to the horizon. My heart fills up with an endless gratitude. When it’s time for the crossing, I reach Kilitbahir Castle, which stands at the narrowest turn of the strait with its trefoil appearance. Built during Fatih Sultan Mehmed’s rule, the castle functions as a historical structure. After going around the bastions of Kilitbahir, which means “the lock of the sea,”, I take the ferry directly to Çimenlik Castle.
On the Anatolian side of the Çanakkale Strait, built under the aegis of Fatih Sultan Mehmed, Kale-i Sultaniye, known today as Çimenlik Castle, has in time become a part of the city. One of the main constituents of the city’s defense throughout the centuries, the castle is a unique venue that lays the rich history of Çanakkale before you. The castle, which shares the narrowest pass of the strait with Kilitbahir Castle, houses Nusret, a minelayer and the first vessel to put its stamp on
Homeros’un dizelerinden history as a hero, and the Naval Museum. In the museum part of Çimenlik Castle, various objects that were employed during the Çanakkale War are displayed. One of the most important surviving relics of the Battle of Çanakkale in the castle is the shell that was fired from the British battleship Queen Elizabeth and hit its northern wall on March 18, 1915. Undetonated but having opened up a 2-meter-breach on the wall, today, the shell is still where it originally impacted. The sea-smelling garden of the museum hosts anti-tank guns, shells of various sizes, gun carriages, and what remains of a German submarine that was brought up from the depths of the sea.
After the iodine-smelling blue world of Çimenlik Castle, I visit the streets that preserve the historical atmosphere of Çanakkale. Passing Yalı Mosque and the cafés in the cool shade of trees, I arrive at Fetvane Street, chirping with ceramic shops where stone buildings are lined side by side. It takes me only a few minutes to get pulled towards the gravitational field of the Town Museum that reflects the street spirit. Established in a house built in the 19th century, the Town Museum presents a great opportunity to learn more about an old Çanakkale house and to travel into the city’s historical past. The ground floor of the museum is reserved for temporary exhibitions and the first floor is devoted to the objects that reflect the authentic world of Çanakkale. The top floor serves as a hall where talks on history, art, and culture are held.
The call of Troy
Çanakkale’s history dates back to a time that’s intermingled with legends. It is that era that I want to tap into next. It is hard not to abide by the call of
Bütün zamanları esinleyen efsanenin doğduğu, Odysseus’un kurnaz bir hileyle, bir tahta atla tarih sahnesinden sildiği ya da ebediyen “var” kıldığı Troya’nın görkemli ve trajik öyküsünü yaşamak, zamanın dehlizlerinde dolaşmak için Troya Müzesi kesinlikle doğru adres. the ancient city of Troy that seems to have jumped out of the lines of Homer, and takes you to a mysterious time with its gods, warriors, and mortals who have lost nothing of their fame. From the treasures of Priam to the fight of haughty Hector with Achilles, seeing where a legendary war was fought offers a dream-like quality. This is all brought to life by the Troy Museum, which has brought into service upon the declaration of 2018 as the “Year of Troy” by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. Located right at the entrance of the legendary ancient city of Troy, admitted to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1998, the museum ranks at the top of visitors’ sightseeing list. Greeting them with various enactments along with the tombstones and sculpture excavated from various layers of Troy, the museum dazzles by bringing together artifacts related to the subject from different museums and the cultural assets that were excavated in Troy and Troas. The comprehensive collection of the museum that ranges from glass bracelets to coins, sarcophaguses to altars, lacrimal bottles to inscriptions seems to whisper a history of thousands of years into our ears. Animations, plays of light, and 3-D designs seem to declare that it is just the right time to get lost in the atmosphere of the museum where legend meets reality. It certainly is the right address to experience the effulgent and tragic story of Troy where the legend, an inspiration for all times, was born when Odysseus with a cunning skullduggery wiped the city out or “brought it into existence” for an eternity with a wooden horse.
