In Turkey more than 6,000 children are diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy ever
Serebral Palsi’ye neden olan Affecting 17 million people worldwide, Cerebral Palsy is the most common physical disability. It can occur in childhood as a result of an underdeveloped brain before, during, and after birth. In our country more than 16 babies every day open their eyes to the world with Cerebral Palsy. This means that more than 6,000 children are diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy each year. Along with movement disorder, various other conditions like impairments of seeing, hearing and perception, and epilepsy often accompany it. One in 4 children with Cerebral Palsy cannot speak, 1 in 3 cannot walk, 1 in 2 is mentally disabled, and 1 in 4 has epilepsy. Children with Cerebral Palsy must receive special training and be rehabilitated for the duration of their lives. Early diagnosis and treatment yields positive results.
Spastic Cerebral Palsy is the most common form
The effects of Cerebral Palsy differ from one individual to another depending on the magnitude and location of the damage in the brain. Having 4 different types called Spastic, Ataxic, Dyskinetic and Mixed, Cerebral Palsy’s most common form is Spastic.
In Spastic Cerebral Palsy the muscles are tense and sclerosed. In Ataxic Cerebral Palsy, due to the damage to the cerebellum, the patient experiences problems with their balance. Whilst in Dyskinetic Cerebral Palsy one experiences involuntary movement like turning, clenching, and spasms, in Mixed Cerebral Palsy one experiences spastic, ataxic, and dyskinetic symptoms all together.
Trauma, radiation, and bleeding
Even though one of the inducers of Cerebral Palsy is premature
Bu durum Serebral Palsi’ye yol açan birth, specifically the illnesses ailing the mother before birth, traumas, genetic makeup, drug use, bleeding, consanguineous marriage, and radiation can lead to Cerebral Palsy. Apart from these, early or late birth, abnormal position during birth, low or high birth weight, nuchal cord, asphyxia, multiple pregnancy, complications in labor, and birth trauma are among the factors that cause Cerebral Palsy. Post-birth inflammatory diseases (meningitis, etc.), trauma, hyperbilirubinemia, hypoglycemia, eclampsia, and concussion can lead to Cerebral Palsy.
Conditions that accompany Cerebral Palsy
Cerebral Palsy, on its own, is a physical disability but due to the ailments and conditions accompanying it, it can manifest itself as a more complex disability. Among the conditions accompanying it are not being able to swallow and control salivation. Apart from epilepsy, problems with balance and coordination, musculoskeletal system problems, mental problems, sensory processing disorders, audio-visual impairments, orthodontic ailments, problems with the digestive tract, the excretory system, and behavioral coherence can be encountered. However, even though these problems might be observed in Cerebral Palsy, there are also cases when none are observed. In other words, the symptoms change depending on the root cause of Cerebral Palsy.

Palsi (CP) konusunda geniş hizmet yelpazesine sahip.

Movements of the baby can be indicative
Following up on the development of a baby by the mother is quite important in order to be able to prevent a potential future problem.
If a baby shows signs of the following, the families should consult a neurologist.
In babies younger than 6 months:
•Not being able to hold up the head and control it in the cradle hold position.
•Standing very tense, lax, or slouched.
•Displaying tenseness in their leg muscles or standing in scissoring position.
In babies over 6 months:
•Not being able to roll to the left and right.
•Not being able to use their hands simultaneously. •Problems in bringing their hands to their mouths.
•Not being able to clench a fist with one hand and keep the other open.
In babies over 10 months:
•Not being able to sit independently.
•Unable to crawl on all fours symmetrically.
•The ability to push with its arm or leg on one side, but not the other.
•Whilst being able to move sitting on its hind or knees, not being able to crawl using its arms and legs.
Special training and rehabilitation support
In Cerebral Palsy, restriction of movement due to spasticity is the most common observation. It should not be forgotten, that Cerebral Palsy is not completely curable. In Cerebral Palsy, special training and rehabilitation should start as early as possible and continue lifelong. That way, the life of the individual may become easier and it might be possible for him/ her to become a part of social life. In the treatment of Cerebral Palsy, multidisciplinary work is the most important factor that affects the effectiveness of the process.
You are not alone
In our country there are associations and funds that provide support for children with Cerebral Palsy and their families. Headquartered in Istanbul and having a wide array of services in relation to Cerebral Palsy (CP), Cerebral Palsy Türkiye (Foundation for Spastic Children in Turkey) is an organization that provides diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, and training services to both children and adults with Cerebral Palsy. The organization also undertakes endeavors and operations to provide individuals with vocational training and enhance their quality of life by helping them meet their own needs and carve out a niche for themselves in social life. Cerebral Palsy Türkiye, which was founded in 1972, consists of Metin Sabancı Special Training Schools, and Special Training, Rehabilitation and Family Consultation Centers set up over a 35,569-square meter area in Ataşehir, Istanbul. Established in 2002 by the families that have children with Cerebral Palsy, SERÇEV (Association of Children with Cerebral Palsy) is providing services from its headquarters in Ankara with its 1,400 members and its network of 500 volunteers. SERÇEV is working towards finding permanent solutions to issues related to education and healthcare that prevent individuals with Cerebral Palsy and their families from actively engaging in social life. Educational/Vocational Training, Awareness Training, and National and International Projects are among the association’s activities.
