Gündoğan proposes salary cap for young players
TURKISH GERMAN football player İlkay Gündoğan has spoken out in the debate over millions of contracts and transfer fees for a salary cap for young players.
“Why not say that a player can only earn a certain amount until he is 20?” Gündoğan said in an interview with Sportbuzzer. “In general, it would not hurt, and the youth work would do it good. Because in some cases A-teens are attracted by larger clubs with money, although it would be better to develop them,” the Manchester City midfielder said. “I’m really not a fan of the fact that it goes immediately from zero to 100,” said Gündoğan, who will play in international match against England on Friday night in London before he comes back to the German national team. The 27-year-old has had to cope with various injuries in recent years. Since making his international debut in 2011, Gündoğan has appeared in only 20 games for Germany and missed both the 2014 World Cup and Euro 2016. But he hopes he will not suffer a repeat of those disappointments ahead of next summer’s World Cup in Russia, saying: “If I stay fit, I am sure that I will be in the World Cup squad.” During his injury lay-off, Gündoğan enjoyed the backing of the German Football Association (DFB). He said: “The DFB gave me an extremely good feeling in the past years. They made sure that I still feel important although I have been ruled out for some months from time to time.
