State is annoyed, not the military
It is always exciting when a newspaper like Hurriyet publishes reporting that could change the agenda and draws the public into the debate. But if that story depends on groundless claims to serve someone’s ambitions, then the situation can turn nasty. “No news appears out of the sky. Someone either hands it over or leaks it ... A good journalist knows the reason why it is given to him or her,” is a fundamental lesson at journalism school. It is particularly important to be aware of this situation, given newspaper headlines have paved the way for military coups in the past. Furthermore, an article that could encourage a coup, less than a year after the July 15 coup attempt, is mind-boggling behavior.
