‘Little, little into the middle’
You may have heard the headline’s famous phrase from Turkey’s most famous comedian Cem Yilmaz. In his widely popular stand-up show ‘Fundamentals,’ he describes the restaurant table, ordering dishes in a particularly Turkish way. I’m following in the footsteps of our comedic national treasure while trying to connect the dots for avid readers who pay particular attention to emerging markets. It has been an eventful week what with the US-Turkey visa crisis, a new military operation in Syria with the support of the Turkish army and a political crisis in Spain sparked by Catalonia’s disputed independence referendum. While all these events set the tone for a volatile seven days for the EMEA region, these themes will keep investors and strategists busy in the coming weeks. Spain’s most serious crisis in 40 years appeared to have reached its peak after the business and political elite came together to resist the secessionist pull of Catalonia. Regarding Turkey, strategists suggested that the historically strong US-Turkey cooperation would continue.
