MUSTAFA KESER SAHNESİ
MUSTAFA KESER SCENE
It was those weddings in my childhood that gave me the chance to meet this magical instrument which is called clarinet. I used to keep my eyes on the guy who was playing it. In the beginnings of programmes, its mystic sounds used to inspire awe to people and bring grievance. Through the end, however, its melodical screams used to allow its listeners to collapse in laughter. Clarinet is an irreplaceable element of weddings of Elazığ. In addition, there has been the legendary clarinet performer of this city: Mustafa Keser...
The first clarinet I touched was my uncle’s. That was my first experience. My father had understood my interest for this instrument so he bought me one clarinet. Then I understood that nothing would be the same anymore... I had a passion to discover this miraculous thing. At the same time I was watching the television and trying to sing together with Mustafa Keser who was entertaining millions of people in his programmes. And the day had come: I was able to ask Mustafa Keser the questions which I had been collecting through all my life! While I was looking at his mouth to catch his words, the unforgettable moments of my lifetime flew by...
I am unaccountably happy for sharing this special interview of Mustafa Keser with you.
Is it true that you became a musician to earn a living?
Yes, I became a musician because of obligations. I was unable to do anything else. So I decided to earn my living with music. However, I have always been a person with ideals and purposes. I said to myself “One day I will become one of the most important musicians of this country”.
I was singing in a taverna in Izmir/Basmane while I was a civil servant in the army. At the same time I worked as a taxi and minibus driver. For 6 years I had been living with 2 hours of sleep. I was playing tanbur with Zeki Müren on the stage. Right after the programme I used to run down, take the taxi and look for customers. While I was waiting for customers at stops and stations, the car’s radio was always open because I was studying for radio exams. Cenap Şahabettin’s (famous Ottoman/Turkish writer) quote explains my situation well. He says “On high hills snakes and birds are seen. The first reached there by crawling, the latter by flying”. I am one of those who reached by crawling. I have had many difficulties.
Sahnede bir tek kişinin bile benden kopuk olmasına izin vermem.
I do not let anyone go disjointed on the stage.
Müzeyyen abla 1978’in Aralık ayı başında beni İstanbul’a davet etti, bir ay kadar sahildeki Pembe Köşk Gazinosu’nda çalıştım.
Tanbur, lute, violin, bouzouki... You almost play every single string instrument. You also played the organ on scene. You are originally a saz player. How come vocalising prevailed?
Not every instrument but let’s say some of them...
I had been a saz player in Izmir. Then Müzeyyen Senar came for a programme. It was several hours before the programme. We were preparing and she was sunbathing in her swimsuit. Brother Kemal told me to sing a song from Elazığ because Müzeyyen Senar was a big fan of our local songs. So I started singing “Kara Erik Çağala”. She suddenly turned to us and asked who had been the singer. Brother Kemal “Our Kurdish boy” said. She called us over, set the table and we ended up playing and singing together. When we were warned that it was 9 o’clock and we had only 15 minutes for the programme, I perceived that time had flown. We had been singing for hours!
Müzeyyen Senar asked me why I wasn’t singing despite my beautiful voice. I told her that in Izmir it was something difficult and singers from Istanbul and Ankara were favoured. I also added: “If you want this that much, you can take me to some of your taverna programmes, then I can gladly sing”.
She invited me to Istanbul at the beginning of December 1978. I worked at Pink Pavilion Taverna for a month. It was my first wide scale programme as vocalist there. Zeki Müren came three times with flowers to listen to me. Every night there was a big table full of musicians who had heard of me and come to see my performance. During those days Orhan Gencebay called me to make an album. At the same time I had to go to Izmir because my first child was about to be born. I was planning to come back to Istanbul after my child’s birth and continue my work. The coincidence is that the Izmir Radio (of the state) was about to hold an employment examination. I passed the exam and delayed my Istanbul journey for 10 years.
Türkiye’de Gazino mu kaldı? Kalmadıysa siz yıllardır ne yapıyorsunuz?
Keşke benden beş on tane daha olsaydı. Benim gazinom otuz senedir aralıksız çalışıyor ve haftalar öncesinden rezervasyonlarımız doluyor. Bu başarının başka bir örneği yoktur.
Are there still tavernas in Turkey? If not, what have you been doing?
So many that I wish there were 5 or 10 Mustafa Keser to fill them! My taverna has been open for 30 years without any break. All reservations deplete a week before my programme.
There is no another example of this success story.
Neyi dinler, neyi dinlemez, neden dinler, neden dinlemez?
İnsanlar icra ettiğiniz müziğe iştirak ettikleri oranda, musiki açısından kendilerini tatmin olmuş addediyorlar.
Ritmin insan yaşamı üzerindeki etkisi çok önemlidir. Seslendirilecek eserleri belirlerken ritimsel sıralamaya çok önem veririm. İyi bir icranın temel kuralı notadan önce ritimdir. Ben aynı usul ve ritimde üç eseri arka arkaya okumam çünkü melankoli yaratır ve insanların dikkati dağılır. Seçtiğim eserlerin usullerinin farklı olmasına dikkat ederim, usulleri aynı olursa bu sefer giderleri farklı eserler seçerim.
What does singing mean?
Singing is having conversation under the surveillance of melody. There is a topic in the song that you sing and we narrate this topic to our audience. We have to use our body language and our mimics as if we were speaking. If you dance with rejoice while saying “I am in tears”, no one would understand you. A vocalist must listen to himself.
Thanks to you millions of people listen and love classical Turkish songs that they had not heard of before. You have destroyed the conviction which assumes that classical music is obsolete. What is the secret of this achievement?
I have been singing and observing people for more than 50 years.
What they listen to or not, why one listens to that specific song or not... Finding answers to this question is my profession.
The more people participate in the music you render, the more they feel satisfied. If you are not capable of making the audience participate in, you can be the best singer in the world but they will just say “Yes he sang well” and nothing more.
Rhythm is crucial in human life. When I determine the songs I was going to sing, I put them in order within the context of rhythmic grading. The cornerstone of a good rendering is the rhythm. That comes before the note. I do not render 3 consecutive songs with the same style and rhythm because it creates melancholy and the audience gets distracted. I pick up songs with different modes. If I have to sing with same manners, then I try to sing them with different manners.
You have attended the programmes in the state channel relating to the classical works of the Ottoman Era and the Early Republican Era. The programmes made tremendous impact. Thanks to this, many young people heard for the first time the actual songs of this region. At what rate is the interest for our classical music?
I have been attending TV programmes for 30 years. These programmes are very special for me. They will bring me and my music into the future. In last 30 years, there is a decline in the interest towards our classical music. I think one of the reasons of this unpleasant situation is the state channel’s wrong actions. They do not do this deliberately for sure. In one point they removed rhythms from the channel’s emissions on the pretext of the rhythms making noise. Music is a mix of rhythm and melody. The human life is a rhythm, even a human heart operates based on a rhythm. They endorsed the idea “The slower you sing, the better you are”. Their wrong decision cost them losing massive audiences. It was the private channels that made them change their minds. Until their cleaning up the situation, people’s taste had already been altered by the private channels. Our real classical Turkish music will come to an end in 15-20 years. I will die one day. You are young. One day you will say that I was right. Some people would be angry with me because I am saying these words but what I say is what I see and live.

Ahmet Özhan benim kasetimi dinletmiş Aka Gündüz Kutbay’a.
According to your heart, who is the best vocalist and saz player?
It is very difficult to specify. As vocalist, I could say Bekir Sıtkı Sezgin’s name. I have not seen anyone like him. Although he sings with super shrill manner, his voice obtains more and more dominion. The thing is I cannot say a specific name. There are many authentic vocalists.
As fiddle player I can tell Haydar Tatlıyay’s name. If he had had the essential support, he would have been the Turkish Niccolo Paganini. Nonetheless, he was not accepted to the state radio! He was taken off to the radio station and met Mesut Cemil but this meeting did not bear fruit.
Did your father affect your music?
Despite the fact that he graduated from primary school, he was able to make technical drawings. 80 years ago in Maden district of Elazığ the fiddles that he had created were being sold to the United States. However, we were being looked down on because of Kurdish descents.
When looking back, is there anything that you feel regretful for? Anything that you say “I wish I had done”?
Ahmet Özhan made Aka Gündüz Kutbay listen my record. When he listened to my voice, he asked Ahmet Özhan my name and he wanted to meet me. Ahmet Özhan called me and explained the situation. However, I could not find a chance to go and meet him. 2 months after this conversation with Ahmet Özhan, Aka Gündüz Kutbay passed away. If only I had met him...
You work from 3 to 5 hours per day even though you are 75 years old. What is the content of your work?
I continue learning, I write notes and I renew my archive. I have written almost 4000 notes myself. After completing my work, I will upload them on the internet in order for them to be benefited.
You personally read all of your mails. We are the witnesses of this since we sent you an email as well. How do you make time for that?
One of the crucial factors that made me a permanent member of the music world is that I truly love and regard those who love me. I recently read a tweet that was saying “He is an Anatolian gentleman whose live performance is not less impressive than Metallica”...
