Bazı kaynaklara göre bölgedeki direnişçi Rum aileler Trabzon'un Of ilçesi civarlarına yerleştirilmiş. Girit adası Birinci Balkan Savaşı sonrasında 1913’de Yunanistan'ın egemenliğine geçmiş. İkinci Dünya Savaşı sırasında Adaya çıkan Alman askerlere karşı destansı bir direniş gösteren ada halkı büyük kayıplar vermiş.
Having been the centre of Europe’s first advanced civilization, the Minoan (c. 2700–1420 BC), Crete hosted various civilisations of various states. Subsequent to the Roman Empire and the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire domination, Crete was then captured by the Arabs and reigned by Hafsies of Abbasids between the 828 and
961. In 961, Nikephoros Phokas of the Byzantine returned the island after expelling the Arabs. The Venice got the advantage of the dissolution of the Byzantine and became the new ruler of the island in 1212.
The Ottoman Empire captured Crete in 1645. Despite the fact that capturing the most parts of the island was quite effortless, the region of Heraclion resisted for 24 years. It was Fazıl Ahmet Pasha’s success in 1669 who managed to capture Heraclion. According to some sources, the Greeks of Heraclion who had resisted to the Ottoman rule were sent to Pontos region of the Black Sea. The Greek government declared that Crete was now Greek territory and it was internationally recognised in 1913. During the Second World War, the Cretans heroically resisted against the Nazi occupation and suffered great losses.
As a cradle of civilisation, Crete’s nature is as rich as its history.
Girit göçmenlerinin yurdu Bodrum’da lise okumuş, 1922 Mübadelesi’nde Bodrum’dan Girit’e gönderilen Rumlar’ın semti Nea Alikarnassos’a (Yeni
Crete is undoubtedly one of the gardens of eden of the world. Incontrovertibly, all of these cultural motives enliven in the Cretan music. We did an interview with a precious individual, Eirini Derebeyi when it comes to about the local Cretan music. I must emphasise that I studied high school in Bodrum, in the land of migrants who had come from Crete within the context of the Population Exchange of 1922. I also visited the neighbourhood of “New Halicarnassus (Bodrum)” in Crete to where the Greeks of Bodrum had been sent in 1922. I asked my questions about history, nature and the musical richness of Crete in accordance with these memories:
Karolos Kouklakis
All I know is that my greatgrandfather was a caretaker in a large area that was crossed by a river.
Feudal lords were called “Derebeyi” during the Ottoman times. Owing to the fact that you have that surname, we would like to ask: What do you know about your family’s past?
In fact, I don't know much about my last name. All I know is that my great-grandfather was a caretaker in a large area that was crossed by a river. So the Turks gave him this nickname as he seemed to have control of the river.

I think for centuries they deeply interacted and it makes sense since the Ottomans always appreciated the Byzantine culture.
You have studied traditional Byzantine music. How is your observation about the interaction between the Byzantine music and the Ottoman music?
Clearly there is a lot in common between the two. I think for centuries they deeply interacted and it makes sense since the Ottomans always appreciated the Byzantine culture. None more so than, Greek oral musicians’ reputation was truly high and had a big impact on the Turks and vice versa. Two kinds of word music were born in the same place. So, the result is this deeply-routed interaction.
Neden Girit’i tercih ettiniz?
Although you began your music career in Athens, you have been continuing it in Crete since 2008. Why did you opt for Crete?
I was born and raised in Athens from parents of Cretan and Minor Asian descents. I spent many summers in Crete and grew up with the Cretan music. I started making music in
1992 at the age of 16 since I was a member of the musical ensemble “Paleina Seferia” with Karolos Kouklakis and Zacharias Spyridakis. I love the Cretan music and always find it interesting in a different way because it expresses various colours from end to end. Certainly, the position of the woman in the last century was not the same as it is now. A woman's exposure to the public was not acceptable. There were exceptions too. Lavrentia Bernidaki for instance, thanks to the companionship of her brother Giannis Baxevanis, had the opportunity of recording music. However, there were many other women who never had this opportunity or they considered singing song was shameful.
I was born by chance at a time when the things were changing. Sure, this music is still male-dominated but there is a room for the women who love this music. I don't know if I am one of the first women in terms of changing this male dominance, I just hope that I positively influenced the younger girls who came closer to this music by means of me.

You not only sing but also play tambura, kaval and IstanbulConstantinople Lute. How can you describe your music?
I am a graduate of the Pallini Music School, through which I came in contact with traditional music and these instruments. Until the age of twelve, I was only involved in western music (French horn and classical song). The Music School opened up my musical horizons and shaped my musical character. Then, thanks to the great collaborations with great personalities of the Greek and foreign music scene, I entered into a process of evolution which is necessary.
In Crete we find several instruments besides the lyre and the violin which are the most famous instruments for most people. There are also the lute, the bulgari and the mandolin as well as wind instruments such as the Thiaboli, the mantoura and the askomandoura. There is also a percussion instrument, toumbaki which is a small drum.
The Population Exchange of 1922 exiled millions of people. Nonetheless, the music culture of these people was not affected by the exchange. After a century in Istanbul, Athens, Thessaloniki, Izmir and Crete still similar melodies are heard. “Musically speaking”, in what degree we are similar or separated after all of the unpleasant incidents of the last century?
The urban songs that were not for dancing but for companies sitting around a table are called Tabachaniotika. They are the songs that have the most similarities with the amane (a music genre derives from Minor Asia) and their influence from amane is obvious. A key example is Mehmet Stafidakis who is the founder of the Stafidian purpose (series of songs found by Mehmet Bey, a Turkish Cretan). After all, everyday life was the one that created the companionship of Greeks and Turks who always sang together to express their joy and sorrow. Nikos Koufianos (1928-1934) was the first person who recorded a small series of these songs but later became known by Stelios Fustalieris who had been associated with these songs with which he called “Cretan rebetika”.
There have been tragic events that have divided the people of Greece and Turkey. Unfortunately, the political games that are being played are only about interests that have nothing to do with the common people of these two countries. The respect I have received from Turkish musicians is really great and of course I reciprocate. Music was and always will be the language of the heart.
