Orta Doğu sanat sahnesinde çağdaş galerileri ve kültürel etkinlikleriyle yükselen yıldızlardan biri Beyrut. 2015’te yeni yüzüyle tekrar ziyarete açılan Sursock Müzesi, Lübnan çağdaş sanatının zenginliklerini merak edenlerin mutlaka görmesi gereken bir yer. 1912’de dönemin aristokratlarından Nicolas Ibrahim Sursock’un yaptırdığı villa, kendisinin vasiyeti üzerine 1952’de Beyrut şehrine armağan edilmiş ve kapılarını ziyaretçilere ilk kez 1962 yılında açmış. Mermer merdivenleriyle; Lübnan, İtalyan ve Osmanlı mimarisinden ögeler taşıyan dış cephesiyle dikkat çeken villa, o dönemlerden kalan sayılı yapılardan biri olmasıyla da ayrıca önemli. Şu âna kadar Lübnanlı ve uluslararası çağdaş sanatçıların eserlerini sanatseverlerle buluşturan 100’den fazla geçici sergiye ev sahipliği yapan müzenin kalıcı koleksiyonunda İslam sanatı, modern sanat ve Japon gravürlerinden parçalar yer alıyor. Reopened in 2015 after a restoration, Sursock Museum is a must-visit for those who are curious about the richness of Lebanese contemporary art.
Built in 1912 by a wealthy aristocrat of the time, Nicolas Ibrahim Sursock, the villa was donated to the city of Beirut in 1952 as requested in his will and was opened to visitors for the first time in 1962. Standing out with its marble stairs and façade that comprises elements of Lebanese, Italian and Ottoman architecture, the villa is also important for being one of the few structures dating back to that period. Having welcomed more than 100 exhibitions by Lebanese and international contemporary artists, the museum’s collection includes Islamic art, modern art, and Japanese engravings.
