HE PREPARED ITALY FOR THE EURO AND TOOK THE HELM
Mario Draghi was born in 1947 and has been the chairman of the European Central Bank since November 2011. Draghi was named “the world’s strongest 8th person” by Forbes in 2014, and he was named “the world’s secondlargest leader” by Fortune in 2015. He has been the cover of the world’s leading magazines such as Time and Stern. Born in Rome and the son of a banker father and a pharmacist mother, Draghi graduated from La Sapienza University and received his PhD in 1976 from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA. Draghi’s doctoral advisors were the famous economists Franco Modigliani and Robert Solow. Draghi worked at the University of Florence as a professor from 1981 to 1991 and he also worked at the Harvard University. Draghi also represented Italy at the World Bank. From 1991 to 2001 Draghi, who was the Undersecretary of the Treasury of Italy, also served as the chairman of the national committee for privatization and played an important role in Italy’s public debt, reduction of budget deficits, and stabilization of exchange rate and interest rates. With this work, Italy has played an important role in fulfilling the Euro area criteria. And he got a nickname for Nintendo’s video game character, “Super Mario”. His successes attracted international attention, and from 2002 to 2005,he was a member of the executive committee of the US investment bank Goldman Sachs. In 2006, he returned to Italy as Governor of the Central Bank and served until 2011. On May 7, 2011, the Council of the European Union accepted his candidacy as President of the European Central Bank. Draghi’s appointment as the new president on 24 June 2011 was confirmed by European leaders. On November 1, 2011, he took over from Jean-Claude Trichet.
