Start your day at some egg-cellent brekkie places

eggs for breakfast is always an eggcellent (forgive the cliché, we couldn’t resist!) idea. But then, egg lovers can be very picky. We like the eggs cooked, just right – soft boiled, warm runny yolk, fluffy when scrambled, and whirlpool poached. In short, pleasing the egg lover is a tough task. Hence, it goes without saying that we had our expectations set pretty high, much before we booked ourselves a table at Claw BBQ Crabshack & Grill, Souk Al Bahar (04 4322300). We were there to sample their breakfast menu and the eggs... err... chefs didn’t disappoint us – in fact, we were overwhelmed with their generous portions.

Challenge number one was to resist the choices in shakes – we’re talking Oreo Shake with vanilla ice cream and Oreo cookies and Reeces Pieces with vanilla ice cream, peanut butter, and Hershey’s chocolate, amongst others. But, we did. Top Up, a juice blend of carrot, orange, and ginger and Cast Away, a mango, pineapple, pear and yoghurt smoothie, were ordered. The breakfast menu is divided into Light, Good Stuff, and Eggs. We knew what we wanted this time around, and also made a note to come back for the Good Stuff, which includes pancakes with pecans and maple syrup and also French Toast filled with Nutella.

First up was a dish for fans of Hollandaise sauce – Southern Fried Chicken came smothered in the sauce. Called The Redneck (Dh69), the dish included two poached eggs and breakfast potatoes. The sauce was rich and creamy; in short it won us over with its lemony buttery taste and texture. Satiny smooth eggs shared the limelight with crunchy, moist chicken. Mexican food lovers could try the Huevos Rancheros (Dh49); made of two sunny side up eggs, avocado, beans, and Pico de Gallo in a spicy tomatoes sauce. The dish had tomato lovers written all over it, and got its crunch from the salsa fresco.

Eggs were the showstopper – golden runny yolk, silky texture and crispy edges. We wiped off the sauce with some flour tortillas.

Breakfast is served on Fridays, 8am until noon and on Saturdays, 8am until 2pm.
