Five minutes with Timmy Trumpet

- DAVID LIGHT david@khaleejtimes.com Freaks.

HE’S A DJ, producer and live instrumentalist and needs no introduction. The award-winning, multi-platinum selling Aussie recording artist, Timmy Trumpet took the world by storm with his trumpet-over-beats tune Freaks in 2014 and has never looked back. Playing Zero Gravity’s Ritual Pool and Beach Brunch on Friday, we caught up with Timmy for a few words.

What have you got planned for your Dubai set? Please say we can look forward to

Freaks will always have a place in my set, but I’m excited to be dropping my favourite unreleased tracks. They are absolute beasts. I can’t wait to share them with you guys.

Are you looking forward to landing in Dubai?

I’ve been hearing stories of Dubai for years. I’m excited to finally get a chance to see how wild the crowds actually are.

Where is the best place to perform?

I’m pumped to be playing the main stage at Tomorrowland again this year. It was absolutely mind blowing last year, so I can’t wait to do it all over again.

Are you positive about the future of dance and electronic music in general?

It’s hard not to be positive about it. It’s easier than ever to create music and have it heard. The more music that’s out there the better and if everyone’s making good s*** then I’m happy.

How has your own style evolved over the years? At what point did you decide to incorporate live instrumentals? How did you know it would work?

I actually started out as a jazz trumpeter. I’ve been playing basically since I could hold it. It wasn’t until a DJ friend of mine convinced me to come up on stage and play with him that I realised how well the two go together.

What are you currently working on?

I’m always working on new music. I’ve got so many tracks on the go at the moment and I love all of them. I always work them into my set. I love seeing the crowd’s first reaction to a new monster.

Are there any collaborations we can look forward to?

If you haven’t checked out my track Underground with Hardwell, you should! My next release is a collab with Jetfire. It’s got a bit of a salsa vibe to it but it goes hard.

Do you think the time when you broke out was the optimum time for your music or would you like to be starting out today?

I’ve been writing and performing music my whole life so it’s hard to say what it would be like to start out today but I think there’s a lot of benefits to being able to experiment with your style while you’re still an unknown.

What would your advice be for anyone trying to get into the industry?

Work hard and stay humble.

Who do you credit as influences and who are you listening to at the moment? Is there anyone you think may be a big in the future?

I grew up loving guys like Stevie Wonder but I’m influenced by all sorts of things these days. You are what you listen to. It’s hard to predict who will make it big but there are a huge number of hungry talented producers out there willing to put in the hard yards.
