Mithila Palkar is amongst the most popular faces to emerge from the world of web series in India. The young, vibrant actress and singer started off her career with Filter Coffee (a YouTube channel) as an anchor for one of their online series called News Darshan, a satire based on the show, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, which aired in 2015. She got her first acting break in a supporting role in the film Katti Batti (2015), starring Kangana Ranaut and Imran Khan and by 2016, she was counted as one of the most popular faces amongst the youth in India when two of her videos titled Confusing Things your Girlfriend Says and Annoying Things Boyfriend Do went viral on social media platforms. Palkar caught the attention of music lovers after doing a fusion of the Marathi song Hi Chaal Turu Turu and Anna Kendrick’s Cup Song. In 2017, she made her debut as a lead in the Marathi film, Muramba, by Varun Narvekar. She also played the lead in the popular web series Girl in the City, in which she plays the character of Meera.

Now she is all set to make her mark in Bollywood with her upcoming film Karwaan, alongside Irrfan Khan and Dulquer Salmaan. Excerpts from an interview:

What Karwaan is all about

“Karwaan essentially means a journey wherein people join in one by one while travelling and this is what (the film) is all about. In the movie, we have three characters – played by Dulquer, Irrfan, and me – who join the journey one by one.

“Basically, it’s about a journey of life and how the characters discover each other, and themselves. You know through tragedy you discover emotions.

“Our director (Akarsh Khurana) has this fantastic quality of finding humour in everything, without trivialising anything. The story deals with two bodies. It’s tragic, funny and emotional. That’s what Karwaan is about.”

Working with Dulquer

“I was very excited to work with DQ (Dulquer Salmaan), I mean who doesn’t want to work with one of the finest artists the country has today? It was a great opportunity for me. I was fortunate to work with both the lead stars.

“Being a superstar, I found DQ to be extremely humble. He never made me feel intimidated. What worked in my favour was I got to be his friend first before becoming his co-actor.”

Sharing space with Irrfan

“Irrfan sir is fantastic. He is the most spontaneous actor. I was in awe of him. I really love and respect him. Initially, I was a little worried about sharing screen space with him. It took me a while to realise that I was his co-actor, not his audience (that) I could just sit there and get lost in his performance.

“He teaches you how to be aware and I don’t think I have enough words to describe how it has been working with him.”

Movies Vs Streaming

“I think now that there is no line between any of the mediums, everyone has an opportunity to be everywhere. The sudden boom in streaming service in the last two years has changed everything (for us). There are people working on web series and vice versa, there is no bifurcation anymore.

“It’s an exciting time to be in the entertainment industry because there are no limits. The opportunities are limitless, there is going to be so much more going to be happening (in the future).”
