Editor’s Note
It’s been raining movies at the cinemas this weekend. Be it the Irrfan Khan-Dulquer Salmaan led Karwaan, or the Rishi Kapoor-Taapsee Pannu starrer Mulk or Anil Kapoor, Aishwarya Rai and Rajkummar Rao’s Fanney Khan, there was something for everyone out there in theatres for a change. Oh, if you are a Hollywood buff, let’s not forget The Spy Who Dumped Me starring That 70’s Show’s (one of our faves) Mila Kunis.
Then of course from the Malayalam film industry there was Anjali Menon’s directorial Koode starring some of the most talented actors from down South. The film marked the comeback of the girl who could easily don the epithet ‘Kerala’s Own Sweetheart’ such is the appeal of Nazriya Nazim across all generations and gender. She is one actress whose spontaneity on screen is such that you could easily watch her histrionics and feel as if you are watching your sister or your best friend or a next-door neighbour. City Times caught up with the actress for an exclusive chat (pages 10-11) about her return to the big screen.
While most directors prefer to surround themselves with yes-men, it was quite refreshing to hear Anjali Menon welcome all opinions. Our brief conversation with the talented director ahead of watching Koode at the local theatres showed us exactly why she is a filmmaker with a sensitive soul, who has never had a bad run at the cinema. She shows us how when passion meets creativity and hard work, nothing or nobody can stand in your way.
